The Department of Cultural Studies will be hosting the 12th Annual Kamau Brathwaite Lecture in Cultural Studies, entitled:
“Limbo State of Mind: Reflections from a Bajan Creative Arts Therapist in the Wake of Being Black.”
The lecture will be presented by Ms. Varia Williams, and will take place on Thursday 26th March, 2026, at 7:00pm in the Walcott Warner Theatre.
In addition to the lecture, Ms. Williams will also facilitate a Creative Arts Therapy Workshop on Friday 27th March from 4:00pm to 7:00pm in the EBCCI Dance Studio, Rex Nettleford Performance Complex. Space is limited for the workshop but if you are interested and know of any students who would benefit from such a workshop, please send an email with names to hold a spot. Interested in art, music or filmmaking?
We are inviting youth 18-29 who self-identify as Black of the African Diaspora to be part of the I Dream a World project. You do not need to have special skills or knowledge to participate. You will participate in seven 2-hour art, music and filmmaking workshops with participants in Toronto and Barbados. You will receive $40 for each workshop attended. Workshops will be held between April 2026 to November 2026.
I Dream a World is an Afrofuturism project that studies the arts as a driver for social change. The project is grounded in reimaging a world in which Black people are leaders and Blackness is celebrated. This project is funded by the Canada Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
