EGCG (a compound in Green Tea), Curcumin (a compound in Turneric) and Apigenin (a compound in Chamomile Tea and Parsley) have shown excellent binding activity on the viral proteins of SARS-CoV-2 in molecular docking carried out by researchers at Era University. The binding of EGCG is seen to be even better than the binding of Remdesivir and Chloroquine (2 drugs being used in COVID-19 cases) on the viral proteins.
Mr. Mohsin Ali Khan (Chancellor, Era University and co-author of the research) said, “These are promising results and more research is needed to explore EGCG as a potential drug for the treatment of COVID-19. Until then, people may consume Green Tea, Turmeric, Chamomile Tea and Parsley more regularly as, even apart from this study, these foods have been reported to have anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties."
