SECW je pažljivo osmišljen događaj kako bi okupio sve ključne sudionike u oblastima energije i klime, te predstavio održive energetske i klimatske politike zasnovane, prije svega, na dostizanju EU ciljeva, definisanih na istraživanjima, studijama... godine organizuje SARAJEVO ENERGY AND CLIMATE WEEK (SECW) / SARAJEVSKU ENERGETSKU I KLIMATSKU SEDMICU, međunarodni događaj usmjeren na pravednu tranziciju energetskog sektora uzimajući u
obzir klimatske ciljeve i dekarbonizaciju energetskog sektora. Tokom pet dana interaktivnih diskusija na najvišem nivou, SECW će okupiti preko 1000 učesnika iz cijelog svijeta, uključujući visoke dužnosnike, ministre u oblasti energije, klime i okoliša, predstavnike institucija Evropske unije, predstavnike vlasti, akademsku zajednicu, stručnjake, investitore, finansijere, nevladine organizacije, medije i ostale zainteresirane strane, a prezentovat će se i diskutovati aktivnosti i rezultati projekata međunarodne pomoći
BiH, ali i zemljama regiona. Vizija je da SECW postane ključni događaj u regionu Zapadnog Balkana za sve djelatnike u energetskom sektoru, koji kreiraju politike, donose odluke, vode korporativne strategije, poslovni razvoj i tehnološke inovacije slijedeći obaveze iz Ugovora o uspostavljanju Energetske zajednice, Pariškog sporazuma i Sofijske Deklaracije.

Irena Tsakova, General Manager of Ada Tepe, will join us in Sarajevo for Panel 12 – “Modern and Responsible Mining in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Region”, dedicated to the future of the mining sector, its modernization, and its role in the energy and industrial transition.

Her experience in managing a modern mining operation brings an important international perspective to the discussion on how the mining sector can respond to new demands — from technological modernization and safety to more efficient resource use, environmental protection, and responsible management of mineral resources.

The topic is particularly relevant for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, which have a long mining tradition while facing the need to modernize the sector and align it with evolving European standards.

At a time when critical and strategic raw materials are becoming increasingly important for European industry, the energy transition, and the development of new technologies, the future of mining is no longer solely a question for the mining industry. Khaled Alshehri, Ph.D., an internationally recognized expert whose scientific and professional work lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence, digital technologies, power systems, data centers, and contemporary energy policy, will join Sarajevo Energy & Climate Week – SECW 2026 in Sarajevo.

Khaled Alshehri, Ph.D., serves as Executive Director, AI, Data Centers & Energy Policy at the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center KAPSARC in Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s leading research centers dedicated to energy, energy policy, and the future of global energy systems.

His research focuses particularly on the application of artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies in the energy sector, power system modeling and optimization, the development and management of smart grids, electricity markets, energy efficiency, and the integration of emerging technologies into complex energy systems.

His international professional profile is further strengthened by his academic background in the United States, where he earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His work therefore connects fundamental and applied research in power engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence with the practical challenges of transforming the energy sector.

The scientific contribution of Khaled Alshehri, Ph.D., is particularly relevant in the context of a new paradigm in which power systems are no longer simply physical infrastructure, but increasingly complex, digitalized, and data-driven systems. The application of AI algorithms, advanced analytics, automation, and digital models is creating new opportunities to forecast generation and consumption, manage grid flows, optimize resources, increase system reliability, and integrate renewable energy sources.

Sarajevo is about to become a meeting point for key players from the European and global energy sector. As we count down to SECW 2026, we are pleased to announce that Burkhard von Kienitz, an internationally recognized energy expert and senior executive, will join the conference as the Keynote Speaker on its opening day.

Burkhard von Kienitz oversees COO processes at the headquarters of E.ON SE in Essen, Germany, where he reports directly to the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Leo Birnbaum.

In addition to his executive role at E.ON SE, Mr. von Kienitz lectures at the Technical University of Munich, holds mandates in several national and international organizations, and serves as a Supervisory Board Member of multiple international companies.

Throughout his distinguished career spanning several decades, he has held a variety of leadership positions across the energy sector in different countries. Among his international assignments, he spent three years in Romania, where he led the establishment of shared service units, further strengthening his extensive experience in international business operations and organizational transformation.

Mr. von Kienitz is also a prominent representative of the World Energy Council (WEC). Within this global organization, he serves as Chair for Cross-Regional Cooperation, Interim Chair for Europe, and a Member of the Finance Committee, actively contributing to global dialogue on energy transition, energy security, and sustainable development.

GIZ is an official partner of this year's Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week (SECW 2026), continuing to provide systemic support to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans region in the process of energy transition, infrastructure modernization, and harmonization with European environmental standards.

As part of the event's professional program, GIZ is organizing a series of panels dedicated to key topics in the energy sector. The first in the series, titled "The Future of Renewable Energy Communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina," is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22. Organized as part of the "Community Action for Energy Transition (CAET) in Bosnia and Herzegovina" project, this panel focuses on the regulatory and technical framework for establishing energy communities, local financing models, presenting practical results to date, and strengthening cooperation with local authorities to encourage innovative environmental initiatives at the municipal level.

The program continues on Wednesday, September 23, with the panel titled "Resilience of Electricity Networks to Contemporary Challenges in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Region," dedicated to the resilience of power grids in BiH and the region. The discussion will cover challenges due to aging infrastructure, the integration of renewable sources, and climate change, with an emphasis on technical modernization, strengthening institutional capacities, and alignment with the European regulatory framework.
GIZ will conclude its professional segment on Thursday, September 24, with the panel titled "Energy Efficiency: From Residential Building Renovation to Data Collection." This panel focuses on practical experiences in renovating residential buildings in BiH, mechanisms for attracting investment, as well as the collection and management of energy-saving data to improve policy-making and reporting for the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP).

The partnership with GIZ further confirms SECW's role as a leading regional platform for exchanging experiences, strengthening regional cooperation, and creating concrete responses to contemporary climate and energy challenges.

How can waste be transformed into a resource, and how can the concept of a circular economy be translated into concrete projects, investments and sustainable business solutions? These are among the key questions that will be addressed at Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week (SECW) 2026, during the panel “From Linear to Circular Economy: A Roadmap for Innovation, Investment and Sustainable Growth”.

Among the panel participants will be Ivana Buble Kozinc, Managing Director of XORTIMAX d.o.o. Slovenia, and an expert in waste management technologies and project management. She will share her expertise and perspective as part of a discussion bringing together international experts, companies, institutions and organizations working to advance the circular economy.

Alongside Ivana Buble Kozinc, the panel will feature Vladimír Kočí from the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, Maja Čolović Daul, CEO of Dekonta Bosnia and Herzegovina, representatives of the Czech NGO Options, Harikrishnan Tulsidas from UNECE, Ajla Imamović from nLogic Advisory, a representative of UNDP, and Tina Benda, RIS Manager at EIT RawMaterials.

Sarajevo Energy & Climate Week 2026 is honoured to announce the participation of Ambassador Luigi Soreca, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina and EU Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who will deliver the Welcome and Opening Remarks at this year's conference.

Ambassador Soreca brings nearly three decades of experience in European diplomacy, security, migration, and EU enlargement policy. Throughout his distinguished career in the European Commission and the European External Action Service, he has led key initiatives shaping the European Union's response to major security and migration challenges, while also playing an important role in the EU accession process in the Western Balkans.

Since September 2024, Ambassador Soreca has served as the Head of the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, working closely with institutions and partners to advance the country's European integration agenda and support its green and sustainable transition.

His participation at SECW 2026 underscores the European Union's strong commitment to accelerating the clean energy transition, strengthening climate resilience, and fostering sustainable development in Bosnia and Herzegovina and across the Western Balkans.

Rafael Gómez-Elvira González, Chairman of the NEMO Committee, one of Europe’s leading experts in the organization, functioning, and integration of electricity markets, will join Sarajevo Energy & Climate Week – SECW 2026.

His participation represents significant international recognition for SECW 2026 and further confirms Sarajevo’s growing importance as a regional platform for discussions on the future of energy, security of supply, and the integration of Western Balkan energy markets into the European system.

Rafael Gómez-Elvira González holds a PhD in Engineering and has more than 25 years of professional experience in energy, energy regulation, and electricity markets. Since 2020, he has chaired the NEMO Committee, the European body bringing together and coordinating cooperation among Nominated Electricity Market Operators (NEMOs) in the development and functioning of the integrated European electricity market.

His professional experience is closely connected with key European institutions and processes that have shaped today’s European electricity market. He has worked at the Spanish energy regulator CNE and within the Council of European Energy Regulators – CEER, while currently serving as Director of Public Affairs and Marketing at OMI Group.

He has played a particularly important role in the development of the European Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) market. From 2017 to 2020, he served as Chair of the TSOs-NEMOs’ Day-Ahead Joint Steering Committee, a body that played an important role in the development and geographical expansion of European electricity market coupling.

His participation will be particularly significant through Panel 6, dedicated to one of the most important questions for the future of the electricity sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans:

“Integration of the Western Balkan Countries into the Single European Electricity Market: Are All Stakeholders Truly Aligned?”

The participation of the Chairman of the NEMO Committee in this panel represents a unique opportunity to discuss, from a direct European perspective, the integration of Western Balkan electricity markets, regulatory alignment, cross-border trade, market coupling, and the challenges posed by the region’s increasingly close integration into the European energy space.

Rafael Gómez-Elvira González’s experience is particularly relevant as it comes from the very heart of the European process of electricity market integration. His knowledge and expertise can provide valuable insight into what is required for national and regional markets to become part of an efficient, competitive, and fully integrated European electricity market.

His participation further confirms the international character and ambition of SECW 2026 to position Sarajevo as an important venue for European dialogue on energy and climate change.

Ambasada Republike Češke u Bosni i Hercegovini is once again an official partner of the Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week (SECW 2026), continuing a successful collaboration aimed at promoting sustainable energy policies, security of supply, and climate solutions.

On the first day of the conference, September 21, the Embassy of the Czech Republic will host an Ambassadors’ Panel titled “Energy Security, Geopolitics and Green Transition: The EU View”.
The panel will focus on one of today’s most pressing topics: energy security, geopolitical developments, and the green transition process. From the perspective of the European Union, diplomatic representatives will discuss key challenges surrounding supply stability and explore how geopolitical events are shaping the energy future of the European continent.

The panel provides an opportunity for open discussion on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s position within global climate initiatives and the alignment of domestic policies with EU goals.
The continued partnership with the Embassy of the Czech Republic further reinforces SECW’s role as a leading regional platform for exchanging expertise, establishing new partnerships, and shaping sustainable solutions to contemporary energy challenges.

SECW 2026 will welcome numerous distinguished European and regional energy experts, including Damjan Stanonik, Head of European Affairs and Western Balkans Affairs at BSP Energy Exchange d.o.o. Ljubljana, who will moderate one of the key panels on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, dedicated to the future of the electricity market and the integration of the Western Balkan countries into the single European electricity market.

Stanonik brings significant experience in European affairs, energy policy, electricity market development, and regional cooperation. Since 2021, he has served as Head of European Affairs and Western Balkans Affairs at BSP Energy Exchange, where he is engaged in strategic and coordination activities related to European Union policies and the European legal framework, international projects, electricity market development, market expansion, and the inclusion of new market participants. A particular focus of his work is the implementation of European Green Deal strategies in electricity markets and the coordination of projects in the Western Balkans.

His professional experience also includes work at the European Parliament in Brussels, where he served as an accredited parliamentary assistant from 2014 to 2019, as well as leadership and strategic positions within the institutions of the Republic of Slovenia.

Damjan Stanonik will moderate Panel 6: “Integration of the Western Balkan Countries into the Single European Electricity Market: Are All Stakeholders Truly Aligned?”

The integration of electricity markets is particularly important for the Western Balkan countries, which face a range of significant challenges in the process of moving closer to the European energy market. Harmonization of market rules, cross-border electricity trading, market coupling, regional cooperation, and strengthening security of supply are key elements of this process.

In this context, the experience of BSP Energy Exchange and BSP SouthPool is particularly relevant to the regional discussion. An organized and interconnected electricity market is an important instrument for more efficient use of existing electricity infrastructure and capacities, increasing competition and transparency, and creating a more stable and resilient energy system.

For Bosnia and Herzegovina and other Western Balkan countries, the process of integration into the European electricity market has a strategic dimension. It requires not only alignment of the regulatory framework, but also stronger institutional capacities, the development of market mechanisms, enhanced cross-border cooperation, and more active involvement of all relevant stakeholders in regional and European markets.

The participation of a representative of BSP Energy Exchange at SECW 2026 will provide an additional opportunity to exchange experience on the role of organized electricity markets in the European integration process.

The participation of Damjan Stanonik and his role as moderator further confirm the international character of Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week – SECW 2026, which will bring together representatives of European and international institutions, energy companies, regulators, system operators, electricity exchanges, academia, and other relevant stakeholders in Sarajevo from 21 to 24 September 2026.
