Hasan Nuhanović was an interpreter/translator for UNPROFOR’s contingent Dutchbat III who has actively campaigned for the accurate establishment of justice and truth in relation to the Srebrenica genocide during the Bosnian war as a survivor of the genocide himself. After many years of trial, Nuhanović won an appeal against the Dutch Government in Dutch civil court with the verdict stating that the Dutchbat and in so the Netherlands was responsible for handing over his family members to the Bosnian Serb Army. Due to this, the Dutch State is considered to have been involved in the genocide and in the violation of fundamental human rights. This was an exceptionally important case in the context of international law and the international community. Nuhanović has also played a key role in the establishment of the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial in Potočari and works closely with the Mothers of Srebrenica and the Women of Srebrenica amongst other relevant organizations of the Srebrenica genocide victim survivors and relatives.
