Extra Credit options:
1. Written Analysis-
Review a work of art that you see in a museum or gallery. (First describe simply what you see in the piece. Then give information on the artist, title, and date, and include a discussion of the content of the work, the historical context in which the work was created, the function of the work, and the style.) You must include a photograph with your review, along with the date of your visit.
2. Comparative Analysis-
Find a work of art that is not discussed in our textbook but was created by an artist that we have studied. Write an analysis of the work, comparing it to another work from the same time period but a different region, OR comparing it to a work from the same region but a different time period.
3. Summary of a Film-
Watch a film about the life and/or work of an artist and write a short summary and review. Here is a list of suggested films:
- Derek Jarman’s "Caravaggio" (1986)- a fictional account of the life of Italian Baroque painter, Caravaggio
- Peter Webber’s "Girl with a Pearl Earring" (2003)- about a maid who works in the household of Dutch painter Jan (Johannes) Vermeer
- Peter Greenaway’s "Rembrandt’s J’Accuse" (2009)- a documentary and close examination of Rembrandt’s painting The Night Watch
- Ed Harris’ “Pollock” (2000)
- Julian Schnabel’s “Basquiat” (1996)
- Peter Watkins’ “Edvard Munch” (1974)
- Maurice Pialat’s “VanGogh” (1991)
- Paul Cox’s “Vincent” (1987)
- Banksy’s “Exit Through the Gift Shop” (2010)
- Sophie Fiennes’ “Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow” (2010 (about artist Anselm Kiefer)
- David and Al Maysles’ “Running Fence” (1977 (great documentary following the creation of one of the site-specific works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude)
