Some 4.5 million students studied abroad in 2012, but growth has slowed compared to previous years, the latest Education at a Glance report from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the most thorough international student market report available, reveals.
The report shows that although international student mobility has increased more than fivefold since 1965, when just 800,000 students ventured abroad, this year’s 2.5% growth is down compared to the 7% average annual increase between 2000 and 2012.
The report attributed the slowing to “shrinking support” for financial assistance such as grants and scholarships in the current economic climate, as well as the impact of the global recession on individuals’ finances.
Six countries received more than half the world’s international students, but the report shows that Russia, Japan, Spain, China, Italy, Austria, New Zealand, Switzerland, Korea and the Netherlands all increased their market share between 2000 and 2012.
The US retained its lead as the country welcoming the most international students, though its market share fell 1% to 16% – a further sign that its market dominance is slipping as competitor countries gain ground and non-traditional destinations emerge.
The UK followed with an unchanged 13% share; France, Germany and Australia each had 6% of incoming students; and Canada had 5%.
The statistics indicate that demand for highly qualified immigrant workers remains strong. All of the countries included in the report apart from Germany had a larger proportion of international students enrolled in advanced research programmes than in any other tertiary-level courses, including 80% of Luxembourg’s incoming students. International students account for more than 50% of all students enrolled on these programmes in Switzerland, and over 40% of total enrolments in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
OECD countries received more than three times the number of students they sent abroad in 2012. In the OECD’s 21 European member countries there were three foreign students for every European citizen enrolled abroad, while in Australia the ratio of incoming to outgoing students was 18 to one.
Australia’s incoming to outgoing student ration is notably higher even than its direct competitor countries the UK, New Zealand and the US, which had 13, 12 and 11 international students to each student they sent abroad, although incoming student numbers in the US and UK are in fact much higher.
Luxembourg had the highest proportion of international students in its higher education sector by a large margin, accounting for 41% of total enrolment.
International students also represented a significant share of tertiary enrolments in Australia (18%), the UK (17%), Switzerland (16%), New Zealand (16%) and Austria (15%).
Outbound mobility has remained fairly stable. As in the previous year, students from Asia accounted for 53% of the world’s foreign students with China, India and Korea the largest source markets.
This figure – 1,662,788 – is more than double the number of international students coming into Asia, despite a 59% increase between 2000 and 2012.
Africa shows a similar pattern, with incoming student numbers standing at around half the number it sends abroad, after doubling to 196,568 over the same time period. Meanwhile, Latin America saw nearly three times the number of incoming students – 71,468 – going abroad to study.

Manchester is offering tailor-made courses for groups over July and August 2015, providing students with the chance to learn English while experiencing the sights, sounds, and tastes of Manchester and the UK.
Manchester accommodates an extremely wide range of requests for tailoring courses to individual group’s needs. The groups can suggest what type of social activities they are most interested in, how many class hours they would like, and group size is very flexible.

Our colleague Đinh Ngọc Anh from Blue Ocean in Vietnam, told us about her experience of the Manchester summer school:

“Our students and parents had a wonderful experience in Manchester with such interesting and lovely memories from English lessons with the teacher Sean, the city tour and sight-seeing, to the relaxing stay at Parkway Gate. The students enjoyed staying in Manchester a lot and said that they will choose Manchester for their studies. The programme was well organised.”

Manchester city has endless opportunities for cultural and social activities. When you book your course with Manchester, the group can choose to experience anything including the Football Museum, a trip to London, a tour around key sights in Manchester, the Museum of Science and Industry, a visit to Manchester Metropolitan University, and more.

Tran Huy Hung from Vietnam explains how the summer course influenced him:

“The two-week trip to Manchester and studying inManchester was such a great experience. We learnt many lessons and interesting things and know how to live on our own, which is very helpful for the future. Thanks to the extremely enthusiastic teachers and guides, who have taken a really good care of us and helped our trip to carry on successfully. The trip gave us a very strong impression of the people and also the culture of the Great Britain so that hopefully in the near future, we have a chance to come back to this beautiful city.”

Colorado State University Ranked The 2nd Best Outdoor School In America

According to Best College Reviews, the outdoors offer one of the best learning environments, where lifelong friendships, unforgettable moments, and healthy lifestyles can be forged. By earning this ranking, Colorado State University proves that it sees nature as a great place for reflection, personal growth, and experimentation.
Best College Reviews is an online resource for students trying to decide where to attend college. CSU was listed as second on the list of best outdoor schools, which categorized 35 higher education institutions based on several factors, including:

Average yearly days of sunshine (30%)
Number of school-endorsed outdoor, adventure-oriented sports, clubs, and teams (30%)
Proximity to state and national parks and outdoor opportunities (30%)
Including (progressively weighted less):
Substantial outdoor opportunities on campus or directly adjacent to campus
Outdoor opportunities in town, or that can be accessed without a personal vehicle
Outdoor opportunities within easy driving distance (3 hours)
Outdoor opportunities accessible by other means, or outdoor reserves owned by University
Number of courses requiring outdoor work (10%)
"Many of our top schools use nature as a great segue into, and complement to, higher education," said Merrill Cook, Lead Editor for the ranking. "The presence of high quality outdoor experiences…can often be one of the strongest correlates to student well-being, both physically and mentally," he added.

CSU has a beautiful campus, with 583 acres in central Fort Collins, as well as a 1,438-acre Foothill campus, a 1,575-acre agricultural campus, and 4,043 acres in research stations and Colorado State Forest Service stations. In between the town and mountains (and adjacent to the Foothill Campus) lies Horsetooth Reservoir, six and a half miles of water that can be used for fishing, boating, swimming, skiing, and scuba diving.

Student organizations praised

The website praises CSU’s outdoor student organizations, including fishing, climbing, mountaineering, Nordic skiing, skydiving, snowboarding, English riding, jousting, logging sports, longboarding, mountain horse riding, the outdoor club, and the Heisenberg Society. There are more than 40 outdoor student organizations at CSU, some of which also include organizations focused on the environment and sustainability.

“The Outdoor Program of Campus Recreation hosts over 50 different trips, special events, and clinics each year aimed at providing students with the knowledge and skills to engage in outdoor recreation throughout Colorado,” said Andy Nelson, Outdoor Programs coordinator for the Campus Recreation Center. “Rock climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, skiing and snowboarding, and ice climbing are just some of the many activities offered. Trips and clinics are instructed by student staff, which provides them with the opportunity to develop their outdoor leadership experience,” he said.

Outdoors essential to learning

CSU offers approximately 60 classes requiring coursework be completed outdoors through several of the eight colleges. In addition to the main campus in Fort Collins, the university has a 1,200-acre mountain campus, located in an alpine valley and surrounded by Rocky Mountain National Park, Roosevelt National Forest and Comanche Peak Wilderness area. Hundreds of CSU students spend their summers immersed in environmental education and natural resources field courses at Pingree Park.

CSU’s Warner College of Natural Resources offers an Outdoor Leadership Residential Learning community where students participate in outdoor leadership seminars, Wilderness First Responders courses, outdoor leadership conferences and field excursions to prepare them for personal outdoor adventures and careers in the field.

“CSU’s Warner College of Natural Resources offers eight undergraduate degrees in natural resources subjects from ecosystem science to recreation and tourism, and outdoor learning in incorporated into each degree to enrich students’ education,” said Dean John Hayes. “Colorado State University’s location gives students a unique advantage to learn about natural resources through first-hand experience; surrounded by some of the most amazing natural environments – from alpine mountains to wild rivers to desert plains – that serve as incredible outdoor classrooms and laboratories.”
