Refugee Week is a time to honour the courage and resilience of people who have been forced to rebuild their lives far from home. This year’s theme, “A Million Stories,” reminds us that every person carries a story shaped by hope, loss, strength, and possibility.
At YCC, we are grateful for the opportunity to hear some of these stories. Through our programs and services, we aim to create spaces where refugees feel supported, and empowered as they begin new chapters in their lives. It’s a privilege to walk alongside individuals and families as they settle, grow, and contribute to our community.

The final participants of YCC’s AI Skills Program for refugee and migrant women received their certificates yesterday, marking a proud celebration of their hard-earned achievement.
YCC’s partnership with Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) and Good Things Foundation Australia enables programs like this to support women from CALD communities in gaining digital skills they may otherwise never have had the opportunity to learn. It was a wonderful way to honour their achievements, and we extend our thanks to the dedicated digital mentors who supported this program.

Last week we put out a call for volunteers, well… we had some eager candidates trot in!
Our two very enthusiastic four-legged friends, Gordie and Biddy arrived ready to “help” with our community pantry and foodbank deliveries. Their energy was unmatched, but after careful assessment, we’ve decided they may not be the best fit for heavy lifting. A+ for enthusiasm though💕💙💚
If you feel inspired by Gordie and Biddy’s commitment, we’re still welcoming (human) volunteers to help with our community pantry, foodbank deliveries and container deposit machine. Get in touch with YCC by calling 9687 1560 or emailing [email protected]
Gordy and Biddie’s adorable hi-vis vests were lovingly handmade by our volunteer Sue, a beautiful reminder that every contribution makes a difference at YCC!

Yarraville Community Centre is calling on local volunteers to help keep our community pantry and recycling services running smoothly. If you can spare even 30 minutes, contact 9687 1560 or [email protected].
Volunteering around these days and times in particular are in need of support:
♻️Tuesday help: Foodbank Delivery: 10am–11.30am — unloading Foodbank boxes, items can be mid-heavy (potatoes/milk cartons/fruit and veg boxes).
♻️Saturday help: Container Deposit Machine: Anytime between 12–1pm — maintain the TOMRA recycling machine. About 30 minutes to 1 hour.
♻️Saturday pantry help: Anytime, restocking the outdoor pantry.
Your support keeps food accessible and encourages community recycling. If you’re able to lend a hand, even briefly, please get in touch to support these programs.

It was inspiring for YCC to be a part of the opening of Foodbank Victoria's new Altona warehouse yesterday. The energy in the room and the commitment to fighting food insecurity were truly uplifting.
This new facility will help deliver even more fresh, healthy food to families who need it most. YCC’s CEO Jessie Deane stood alongside Foodbank CEO Dave McNamara, community representatives, and local MPs as this important step forward was celebrated.
Yarraville Community Centre’s food relief program, which supports so many vulnerable people and families, relies on the generosity of community donations and the vital partnership of Foodbank Victoria. We sincerely thank all the volunteers and organisations who contribute to this essential work and help ensure no one in our community goes without.
