🍯 "The Liquid Gold Factory: The Secret Journey of Nectar Inside the Bee" 🐝

​Have you ever wondered what actually happens inside a bee as it buzzes from flower to flower? It’s not just a transport mission: it is a true alchemical transformation. The tiny creature you see in your garden is a complex bio-machine capable of converting simple floral sugars into a millenary super-food: honey. 🐝✨
​1. The Collection: The Proboscis 🌸
​It all starts with the proboscis, an ultra-sensitive "straw-like" tongue. The bee dips it into the flower's calyx to suck up the nectar. Through the esophagus, the liquid slides quickly inward, passing through the thorax—the powerhouse where the strong wing muscles are located.
​2. Storage: The Honey Stomach (The "Grocery Bag") 🎒
​The nectar doesn't go straight to the actual digestive stomach. Instead, it is collected in the honey stomach (also known as the crop or ingluvie). This organ is incredible: it can expand to hold almost the equivalent of the bee's own weight! Here, the nectar is isolated from the rest of the digestive system thanks to the proventriculus, a valve that decides how much nectar should pass to the midgut for the bee's own nourishment and how much should be kept for the hive.
​3. Chemical Magic: Enzymes in Action 🧪
​While the bee flies back home, the transformation begins. The hypopharyngeal glands secrete and add essential enzymes:
​Invertase: Breaks down sucrose (complex sugar) into glucose and fructose (simple sugars).
​Glucose Oxidase: Produces small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, which protects the honey from bacteria. 🛡️
​4. Nutrition and Waste 🔬
​Below the honey stomach lies the ventriculus (the midgut or actual stomach), where digestion occurs to sustain the bee. The waste then passes through the Malpighian tubules (the bee's version of kidneys) and the intestines, finally reaching the re**um, where water is reabsorbed to prevent wasting precious hydration before final expulsion through the a**s.
​Conclusion: A Masterpiece of Teamwork 🏠
​Once back at the hive, the bee regurgitates the enriched nectar to its sisters. Through a process of mouth-to-mouth transfers (trophallaxis) and constant fanning of their wings to evaporate excess water, that nectar finally becomes the thick, golden honey we all know.
​Fun Fact: To produce just one pound of honey, bees must visit about 2 million flowers and fly a distance equivalent to three times around the globe! 🌍✈️

Worker bees from the same queen bee can be different in colour due to genetic diversity. A queen bee mates with multiple drones (male bees) during her mating flight, and each drone contributes different genetic material. As a result, the offspring (worker bees) can vary in appearance depending on which drone fathered them. These genetic differences can affect traits like body color, size, and behavior. So, even though all the workers have the same mother—the queen—they may have different fathers, leading to a mix of physical characteristics within the hive.

We recently had the wonderful opportunity to run a STEM bee educational incursion at Gibb Street Primary School with three pre-primary classes. The students got hands-on experience touching sticky honeycomb, feeling and squishing pollen, and smelling pure beeswax. They also learned all about the fascinating world of bees, including waggle dances, pollination, and honey production. The highlight for me was receiving a heartfelt thank-you card from the students — such a sweet surprise that truly made the day unforgettable

A honeybee flaps its wings approximately 200 to 230 times per second. This incredibly rapid wingbeat is what produces the distinctive buzzing sound associated with bees. Bees flap their wings not just for flying — they also use them for several other important tasks. Here are the main uses beyond flight:
🌀 1. Cooling the Hive
Bees fan their wings to regulate hive temperature, especially during hot weather. They position themselves at the hive entrance or inside and flap their wings to circulate air and cool the brood (developing young).
Ideal brood temperature: ~34–35°C (93–95°F)
Too hot? Bees bring in water and fan it to create evaporative cooling.
🌬️ 2. Ventilation
Flapping wings help ventilate the hive by:
Removing excess moisture
Expelling carbon dioxide
Bringing in fresh air
This is especially important in humid conditions or when many bees are inside.
🍯 3. Evaporating Water from Nectar
When converting nectar to honey, bees need to reduce its water content from ~70% down to about 17–20%.
Bees fan their wings over nectar-filled cells, evaporating the moisture until the nectar becomes thick, stable honey.
📣 4. Communication (Buzzing)
Wing vibrations help in buzzing sounds used for:
Warning intruders
Alarm signaling to nestmates
Certain bees (like Blue banded Bees ) even use wing vibrations in buzz pollination, shaking pollen loose from flowers.

On Monday, 27th May, Bee Educated Incursions once again visited the children at John Wollaston Anglican Community School for a hands-on STEM bee educational incursion. The students had a unique opportunity to feel and smell beeswax, take home wax samples, and hold pollen. Through engaging activities, they learned about pollination, the vital role bees play in our ecosystem, and the inner workings of a beehive. The highlight was viewing the bee colony up close through an observation hive, offering an unforgettable glimpse into the fascinating world of bees.

Bees contribute to more than US$200 billion worth of food production around the world. Without them the world could struggle to sustain the planet's human population of nearly 8 billion. The most prominent causes of bee colonies collapsing are both manmade and natural from pesticide use, global warming, air pollution and drought.

Yesterday at Avonvale Primary School in Northam, 5 classes, Year 6 to Year 1, attended our very educational bee incursion. It was so great seeing the kids, and even the adults, get excited about bees! If you're wanting us to bring our bee presentation to your school or library, just get in touch… We’re buzzing around Perth, attending many different Schools , and we have a few more schools to do next week . So many exciting things happening…I’m so glad I get to share my passion for bees with you guys!
