It all starts with the proboscis, an ultra-sensitive "straw-like" tongue. The bee dips it into the flower's calyx to suck up the nectar. Through the esophagus, the liquid slides quickly inward, passing through the thorax—the powerhouse where the strong wing muscles are located.

The nectar doesn't go straight to the actual digestive stomach. Instead, it is collected in the honey stomach (also known as the crop or ingluvie).
