Photographer Krishnan Venkitachalam captured this extraordinary moment in India: three Baya Weaver birds locked in a mid-air battle over a nest. The males of this species build intricate suspended nests and fight fiercely to steal them from each other.

A biologist-turned-entrepreneur, Kevin Kumala, has developed a plastic alternative that sounds almost too good to be true.

Through his company Avani Eco, he created bags made from cassava root that dissolve in water and break down into organic material that’s safe for marine life. In some demonstrations, the material even dissolves completely without leaving harmful residue behind.

Think about that for a second.

A “plastic” bag that doesn’t sit in the ocean for hundreds of years. No microplastics. No toxic waste. Just something that naturally disappears back into the environment.

It’s innovations like this that make you wonder why we’re still relying so heavily on traditional plastics.

The solution isn’t always about using less. Sometimes it’s about using something smarter.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to capture a once-in-a-lifetime photo of the moon perfectly aligned with landmarks? Italian photographer Valerio Minato spent six years patiently waiting to capture a shot that would later be selected as NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) on Christmas Day.
The photo is breathtaking. In the foreground is the Basilica of Superga on a hill near Turin, in the midground is Monviso, the highest mountain of the Cottian Alps, and in the background, the full moon appears with a subtle Earthshine, known as the “Da Vinci Glow.” This rare alignment only occurs once a year, and Minato faced five years of failed attempts due to cloud cover and poor visibility.
To make the moon appear massive behind the basilica and mountain, Minato used a 500mm telephoto lens, creating a lens compression effect that brings distant objects visually closer. His dedication paid off, producing a stunning composition that blends art, science, and patience.
Since this viral shot, Minato has continued to break records, even winning another NASA APOD in 2025 for a quadruple alignment involving the Sacra di San Michele, the Basilica of Superga, the Moon, and an airplane passing through the frame. His work is a testament to persistence, precision, and the beauty of aligning nature with human landmarks.
