To see more on the RES@T-A program, Australian Story has released an episode dedicated to us - Game Changer!

Showing what the program is, why it was created, and an insight into the personal experiences of two of our offering 1 participants, this episode is an amazing insight to the program and the wider issue of problematic gaming.

We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity and to all those involved!

You can watch the episode here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-03-06/game-over/102060362

New research has shown that video games can change the brains of teenagers. But reducing screen time has seen remarkable repairs.

After you apply to the RES@T program, you will receive an email telling you whether or not you have been accepted into the program. This may take a little time, as we sort through and assess the applications.

Those accepted into the program will be randomly allocated to one of the two RES@T program offerings. The acceptance email will tell you which offering you have been allocated to, and will contain the timetable for your offering.

RES@T staff will then contact you by phone or email to work out the times for the testing sessions.

You may decide you don’t want to go ahead with the program, and that is fine. Once you have given consent you are part of the program.

At the first session, those in Offerings 2 and 3 will do a testing session only. Their first individual program session will occur according to the timetable for their offering (the program timetable is under the ‘Timetable’ tab). Program staff will then keep in touch with you to make further appointments for later testing sessions and individual program sessions.

What are the likely benefits of the program?

1. Participants in the RES@T-A program in Germany have reported benefitting from it, and we think it is likely that teenagers participating in the Australian RES@T-A program may also find it beneficial;

2. There are likely to also be benefits for the families participating;

3. Most treatment programs for problematic screen use and screen disorders are very costly; this program comes at no cost.

4. Each teenager and each parent are given a $20 gift card at the end of each testing session. Those who are tested 3 times will receive $120 in gift cards across testing, and those tested 5 times will receive $200 in gift cards across testing.

Where is it the program held and who is it run by?

The sessions are being run on the gorgeous Central Coast, at the Mind and Me Psychology Clinic in Wyong.

When looking for a space to run the sessions, the RES@T-A team wanted to make sure we found something where participants would feel comfortable and safe. We believe we found just that.

There is an incredible team behind the RES@T-A program. Here is a brief outline:

The program is being overseen by Associate Professor Wayne Warburton from Macquarie University and by clinical psychologists Ms Bree Tebbutt and Ms Adriana Glusman. Psychiatrists Dr Kerstin Paschke and Mr Ole Cloes, who are heavily involved in the program at the German Center for Addiction Research in Childhood and Adolescence at Hamburg University Medical Centre, will also come to Australia for some initial sessions in October/November 2022.

The program has a substantial team of volunteers – academics, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychology interns and psychology students. Ms Emily Kopp is coordinating the support team and the administration of the program. Mr Mic Moshel, a Masters of Neuroscience/PhD candidate who specialises in cognitive tests for screen disorders will conduct the cognitive testing.

Face to face sessions and other testing will be conducted by a range of team members, with individual feedback provided by the Program facilitators. For session 1, our program facilitators are Provisional Psychologists Shane Southwood and Debra Delaney.

What is RES@T-A all about?

RES@t-A is a program developed by a group of psychologists and psychiatrists from Australia and Germany to help teenagers and their families better manage their gaming.

The program focuses on key areas of a young person's life that are commonly affected by problematic gaming, such as sleep habits, eating, exercising, social relationships, communication skills, emotion regulation, and many more. By targeting these key areas, RES@T aims to provide teens with the skills and knowledge to get back on track with daily living. This program is already underway at the German Center for Addiction Research in Childhood and Adolescence in Hamburg, Germany, and the results suggest that what RES@T teaches and provides is helpful to teens and their families.

Both the German and Australian team have been working on this program for the past two years, with multiple revisions taking place to create the final product. We are excited to see it come to life, as we believe it is likely to make a difference in the lives of those with problematic gaming.

Three offerings of the program are being run, with one beginning in mid-October and the other two beginning in early 2023. We still have a few spots available for the first offering starting on the 27th October, so if you are interested, please send us an email at: [email protected].

If you are interested in a later offering or want to speak to us about the program, please feel free to send us an email, we are always happy to have a chat!
