Here at Kulangar Early Learning, we believe January 26th is a day to ally with our local mob and advocate changing the date by not participating in “Australia Day” activities. In solidarity of Invasion day, the children have been learning about the land which they live on and it’s rich culture.

We pay our respects to the Ballardong people and acknowledge them (past, present and emerging) through our daily acknowledgment of country. We are educating ourselves on the wonderful animals that call our bush land their home. We have been looking at the different Noongar seasons, and acknowledging our current season (Birak - aka fire season) by learning fire safety. We have been looking at various recipes by Indigenous chefs and authors and creating meals with their guidance.

This is apart of our normal routine: not a tokenistic, one day program.

At Kulangar Koorda, the children have been learning about colours! As we continue to learn about colours, and the children have shown such a strong interest in sensory play, we decided to make some rainbow clouds! Using a handheld mixer, soap, water and food colouring, we were able to make fluffy soapy clouds! Each child was encouraged to dive right into the water to start mixing up the colours, and to investigate what would happen when we did mix up all the colours!

Hands on experiences like these allow our children to learn through play! Through this experience in particular, they will be able to recall how they mixed the coloured clouds to make new colours!

At Kulangar Wyalkatchem, our older children have been showing such a great interest in making their own meals. To extend on their interest, they had the opportunity to make their first loaf of bread using our bread machine! How delicious!

In preparation for Halloween, we created some spooky spiders today while practicing our fine motor skills! Using cardboard rolls donated by a parent, we cut slits into them to create legs~! The children were encouraged to place the rolls into our paint and then stamp them onto their paper to see what patterns would emerge!

In this activity, we really wanted to focus on our fine motor skills with our toddlers. Fine motor skills are necessary for many aspects of self care for children (including feeding themselves or dressing themselves), and aids in the development of emergent writing skills. This activity allowed our children to exercise those small muscles, and discover how to control our hands, fingers and thumbs!
