Media Release: ATO's credit change smashes small business

The Australian Taxation Office must reverse its decision to end credit-card tax payments for businesses after 30 November.

Senator Hanson said the decision would remove an important cash-flow option for small businesses while the Albanese Government was simultaneously demanding they absorb card surcharges.

“The Albanese Government’s has walked into another unintended consequence because they never think anything through.” Senator Hanson said.

“The Prime Minister and Treasurer promised Australians a cheaper coffee. Instead, it’s more expensive than the old surcharge while small business is going to be squeezed by the ATO.

“Businesses are expected to absorb these fees, while the ATO avoids them by withdrawing credit-card payments.

“Credit helps businesses manage cash flow and meet tax obligations on time. Removing this option will drive businesses to the wall when they are already doing it tough.

“This is to be expected from a Prime Minister and Treasurer who don’t know and don’t care how small businesses work.

“The Government can’t impose payment costs on small businesses while allowing the tax office to avoid them.

“The ATO must reverse this decision immediately.”

📣 IMPORTANT PRICE UPDATE – EFFECTIVE 1ST OCTOBER

From 1st October 2026, new card payment rules come into effect across Australia, meaning businesses will no longer be able to pass EFTPOS/card transaction fees on to customers as a separate surcharge.

As a small business, these fees add up and are simply not something we can afford to absorb completely ourselves.

Because of this, from 1st October, there will be a small $2–$5 increase across our:
🧵 Alterations
✂️ Haberdashery products
🎒 School uniforms
👕 Kids clothing

We know any price increase isn’t ideal, and we have tried to keep the adjustment as small as possible while still covering the rising costs of running a small business.

We truly appreciate your understanding and your continued support of our business. ❤️

💵 Cash is, and always will be, our preferred method of payment — and is always very much appreciated!

📢 A little update from our alterations team ✂️

Due to the high demand for alterations, we are currently experiencing a slight delay with both current and future alteration jobs.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding while we work through our growing workload. At the moment, we are operating as a one-woman show while our wonderful staff enjoy some much-needed holiday time ☺️

We are working hard to get through all alterations as quickly as possible and truly appreciate your patience during this busy time.
