Ear infections rife in daycare kids

At Goodstart, our purpose comes to life through the many and different ways we provide our service to children, families and communities. High quality teaching, learning, play and care is the corner stone of our efforts, however we also go beyond this by partnering with families, governments and many other service providers in local communities. In line with this , we partnered with Earbus Foundation and Connecting Communities 4 Kids to conduct ear health screening for children across a number of our WA Goodstart centres, which led to 27 per cent of children being referred to a GP with suspected otitis media, or glue ear, from September to December last year. We continuously aim to undertake initiatives like these to support children have the best possible start in life.

https://www.midwesttimes.com.au/news/health/child-care-ear-health-screening-reveals-widespread-otitis-media-ng-b881920968z?utm_source=csp&utm_medium=portal&utm_campaign=Meltwater&token=Ih4YMfdAFfHlNM40Q%2B%2B8LR03KCK2KFtZpe%2FurasNqKGpbVMshFhXDrnP%2BsK6mUugb5qad7R5aHRrjI4hkBtnhA%3D%3D

Ear infections rife in daycare kids The extent of otitis media, or glue ear, among hundreds of children across seven Goodstart Early Learning centres has prompted fears many more WA children could be suffering from untreated ear issues.

We are looking forward to our week packed full of NAIDOC themed activities and experiences this week. What are you doing to celebrate NAIDOC Week?

Today marks the first day of NAIDOC Week for 2021. This year's theme, 'Heal Country' calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction. Country sustains our lives in every aspectβ€”spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally. How will you be exploring this year's theme in your service? #NAIDOC2021 Wingaru Education

A cute little cheat sheet of how you can support the re growth of fruits and/or vegetables within your home. Something so simple supports so many areas of development in a child. Do you grow anything at home in your own garden that you then cook with?

As much as we encourage children to wear shoes, there is also many benefits of allowing time without shoes to assist in their development too.

T H A T // first year of daycare.
The year of immunity building for the babe and resentment for the working parent.
It’s the pits. For everyone.

It’s the struggles and the sickness.
The unattainable health that dangles in front of you, always just out of reach.

The sleepless nights, high temps and teething.
The HF&M, the gastro, the coughs and colds and dreaded nits.
It’s the relief of finally getting over one thing, only to catch the next.

It’s the insurmountable loads of washing, the smell of Glen 20 and the steamy bathrooms.
The lack of personal space, the feeling of helplessness and the overwhelming exhaustion.

It’s a never ending, unforgiving, relentless cycle.
They catch it all.
Then they share it all.
And just to ice the cake, once you’re done keeping them all alive, you go down and go down hard.

But to really make life a tortuous battle, that first year of daycare is also your first year back at work.

It’s the real and constant conflict of trying to navigate how to do your job like you always did but also now be a mum to your babe that seems to always be sick.

The days spent trying to function at work on barely any sleep, the leaving early once again and the paper, rock and sc******ng with your partner to see who’s going to take yet another day off.

The internal battle between heart and head. Knowing the only place you need to be is at home with them but still mentally sorting, prioritising and negotiating your work load in the background.

It’s the pile of work left in your wake, the feeling of letting your team down and the guilt that feels heavy and regretful.
The dread of seeing the daycare number pop up on your phone and the repetitive β€˜I’m sorry I have to go’ apologies.

That first year of daycare [and the successive years that follow] are some of the hardest and most draining a working parent will endure. The expectation that you can do it all is exhausting and unrealistic, especially with daycare germ sharing.

That first of daycare is hard.
It’s simply survival.
Everything else can wait.
