UOW's Dr Katharina Peters and honours student Lavinia Stokes were lead authors on a recent study across more than 70 species of toothed whales, including dolphins and porpoises. 🐬🐋
The Pacific had the highest PFAS levels and the Mediterranean the lowest, which the researchers attributed to regional differences in PFAS production, use and regulatory history.
PFAS can disrupt immune, endocrine and reproductive systems, raising concerns for both individual and population health in humans and animals.

Last week, UOW held a service to celebrate the life and legacy of its second Vice-Chancellor, the late Emeritus Professor Ken McKinnon AO, who passed away in April aged 95.
Professor McKinnon led UOW from 1981 to 1994, guiding the University through a period of major growth, expanding its disciplines, developing the Keiraville campus and establishing its first international campus in Dubai.
In 2016 he and his wife, Ms Suzanne Walker established the McKinnon-Walker Trust with a $1.3 million gift, followed by $5 million in 2024 for research fellowships and recently a further $1 million contribution. This is one of the largest donations in UOW’s history.
"Who we are as a University today is deeply rooted in his leadership and his belief in Wollongong’s potential. We are incredibly grateful to him and his wife, Sue Walker, for their enduring generosity in supporting fellowships and scholarships," said UOW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor G.Q. Max Lu AO.
