The Guardian: “The Greens’ defence spokesperson, senator David Shoebridge, has said Australia should have a realistic view of China, its military force and have a frank and honest relationship about human rights and trade. He told ABC’s Insiders program Australia should not “go down a warpath with Washington” against China. He said: “I see a role for us working with our neighbours and working and prevent global conflicts shutting regions.” Shoebridge said Australia does not need nuclear-powered submarines, criticising the Aukus program. “Why are we inviting ourselves to a US war with China by buying platforms and making our defence force an interoperable part of the US?” He said underwater drones and crewed platforms for a defensive purpose could do the job.”
The irony is that the most nationalistic and militarist of Oz current & former pollies and their media mouthpieces are the most eager in disregarding Oz national interests, clinging like limpets to foreign countries (the US & UK) and surrendering our sovereignty to the US.
As P&I editor Catriona Jackson wrote on Saturday: “Mike Gilligan nailed it this week when he said: “The shift to second-hand Virginia-class submarines exposes the deeper flaw in AUKUS: Australia is committing vast public funds to a capability designed around US strategic priorities rather than Australia’s own defence needs.” [Dr Gilligan “worked for 20 years in defence policy and evaluating military proposals for development, including time in the Pentagon on military balances in Asia”.]
“Former Prime Minister Paul Keating made it plain in P&I in March 2023 that the deal was a dud. He said AUKUS was the “worst international decision by an Australian Labor government since the former Labor leader, Billy Hughes, sought to introduce conscription to augment Australian forces in World War One”.”
“Gareth Evans backed up his former leader with pithy, devastating brevity: “AUKUS has been problematic from the outset, in terms of its deliverability, cost-benefit, and implications for our sovereign decision-making agency. Above all, the crazy irony of the whole project has always been that it commits Australia to spending eye-watering amounts to build a capability supposed to defend us from military threats which are in fact most likely to arise simply because we have that capability – and are using it to support the US in some conflict not in our interests to engage in – without any guarantee of support in return should we ever need it.”
