Wodonga Senior Secondary College

WSSC’s Year 10 Boys Basketball team finished fourth at the Upper Hume carnival, held at the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre.

The team opened with a strong 48–13 win over WMYC Felltimber before a closely contested match against Cathedral College, narrowly going down 34–33. WSSC then defeated Wangaratta High School 33–28 and Victory Lutheran College 34–21 in the placing play-offs to secure fourth overall.

Congratulations to the players and coaching staff on a great day of competition. Thank you also to those who volunteered to officiate throughout the event.

A fantastic result for WSSC’s Senior Boys Table Tennis team, who finished in the top six at the SSV State Finals and received the Spirit of Sport Award.

Competing at MSAC, the team faced the 2025 state champions, defeated Traralgon Secondary College 6–0 and narrowly missed a place in the cross-over semi-finals following a close 2–4 result in their final pool match.

Having represented WSSC across Years 10, 11 and 12, the players have trained hard during break times and continually worked to improve their skills. The Spirit of Sport Award is fitting recognition of their outstanding sportsmanship, behaviour and friendly approach towards opponents and coaches.

Year 10 student Ryder Stephenson has shown incredible initiative, securing his own School Based Apprenticeship with JC Butko Engineering. Through his own connections, determination and the support of Head Start, WSSC Careers and BUSY At Work, Ryder is now gaining valuable hands-on engineering experience one day a week while preparing to study his Certificate III in Engineering at Wodonga TAFE.

Our Year 10 Debating Team, of Johnathan Valivaka, Marissa Amsharazzi and Raven Shaban, competed in the Albury Wodonga Eisteddfod Debating Competition on Thursday. Due to their first speaker withdrawing due to illness, the team had to quickly revise their plan. Their first debate was against Scots School Albury in the affirmative position of “no one should be allowed to post online anonymously.”
The team then had one hour to prepare for an unseen topic against Trinity Anglican College, debating against the proposition that “people under the age of 18 should not be allowed to compete in professional sport.” Although they narrowly lost, the team was praised for their maturity, resilience, and ability to present their arguments with personality and creativity. Raven Shaban received a ‘Highly Commended’ award as a speaker, with adjudicators impressed by all speakers. This was the first debating experience for every member of the team, and they well and truly rose to the challenge.

Students from Years 10–12 recently welcomed economists from the Reserve Bank of Australia to WSSC for an engaging seminar on economics and monetary policy.

The session explored current economic conditions—including inflation, growth, employment and global influences—and how the RBA uses interest rates and other tools to influence economic activity.

Students also had the opportunity to ask questions directly during a dedicated Q&A session, gaining valuable insight into the work of the RBA and the decisions shaping Australia’s economy.
