🖤💛❤️ NAIDOC at Nunyara ❤️💛🖤
Celebrating 50 Years of NAIDOC

Deadly Then. Deadly Now.

At Nunyara, we believe NAIDOC is first and foremost about celebrating Aboriginal people, Aboriginal culture and Aboriginal excellence.

Over time, we’ve observed that NAIDOC can sometimes become more about organisations showcasing and promoting themselves to Aboriginal people, with success measured by how many Aboriginal people they engage. Those conversations have their place.

But the official purpose of NAIDOC is to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to create opportunities for all Australians to learn about and participate in those celebrations.

We believe NAIDOC is at its best when Aboriginal people and Aboriginal organisations are at the centre — showcasing our achievements, culture and self-determination, and inviting everyone to experience and celebrate Aboriginal culture, creativity and excellence.

For us, NAIDOC is about Aboriginal people sharing culture, stories, creativity and achievements with everyone — on our terms.

As an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, Nunyara was created by community, for community. We exist to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people, but we believe health starts with culture, identity, connection and self-determination.

During NAIDOC, we choose to celebrate those foundations — and we invite everyone to celebrate with us.

That’s why we’re hosting just one event.

No service stalls.
No promotional material.
No promotional displays.

Just culture. Connection. Creativity. Community.

Today we acknowledge and recognise members of the Stolen Generations and the families and communities who live with the ongoing impact of those policies.

That trauma is not just part of history, it’s still being felt today. And for that, we say sorry.

Understanding this part of our shared story is an important step in truth-telling and healing. It’s a reminder that including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives matters in our classrooms, in our homes, in our workplaces and in our communities.

Happy Mother’s Day to our incredible Early Childhood Educator Mums!

Today we celebrate the women who have already lived a full day before many people even start theirs. The Mums who wake through sleepless nights to comfort little ones, then rise before sunrise to pack lunches, find missing shoes, calm big feelings, braid hair, sign permission slips, and somehow get everyone out the door to child care, kindy, or school, often without a moment to themselves.

And then, after giving so much to their own Families, they walk into our Centre with open arms, warm smiles, endless patience, and hearts full of love for every child in their care. You teach, nurture, comfort, encourage, and celebrate our little learners as though they were your own. You wipe tears, share cuddles, cheer on milestones, and create safe spaces where children feel loved, valued, and seen, even when you’re running on little sleep and pure dedication.

The work you do is not just important, it is extraordinary.

To our amazing Child Care Aunties who are Mums, thank you for showing up every single day with strength, compassion, and commitment, even on the days you arrive already exhausted from the sleepless nights and morning chaos. The love you pour into both your own Children and the Children you care for does not go unnoticed.

We see you.
We appreciate you.
And today, we celebrate you.

Happy Mother’s Day to the Mums helping raise the next generation with love 💕
