On Friday 7 August, our Year 1 Kambarang 9 students enjoyed a fantastic day at the zoo! Thanks to the generous support of The Smith Family, students had the opportunity to take their learning beyond the classroom and enjoy a wonderful day of exploring, discovering, and learning together. Kambarang 9 earnt the trip by winning the PBS 'Decorate the Door' Competition.

Accompanied by Ms Beverley, Ms Ing, Mrs Thomas, and our wonderful parent helpers Mrs Kaur and Mrs Ibrahim, students travelled by bus and spent the day learning about how zoo animals are kept happy, healthy, and thriving.

There was so much to see! Students encountered snakes, lemurs, lions, meerkats, giraffes, rhinoceroses, penguins, zebras, gibbons and many more amazing animals. One of the highlights was comparing the size of their own hands with the hand of an orangutan!

Of course, no excursion would be complete without enjoying a packed lunch with friends and some time to play on the playground.

Deputy Principal, Mrs Thomas was especially proud of the way our students conducted themselves throughout the day. They represented Westminster Primary School beautifully, demonstrating wonderful behaviour, enthusiasm, and curiosity. We were very proud of them!

During Week 1, our school community came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week through a range of engaging cultural activities and learning experiences.

Throughout the week, students participated in activities including making bracelets using the colours of the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag, making lemon myrtle damper, and face painting inspired by Noongar symbols. Our younger students enjoyed a colouring-in competition, while older students put their research skills to the test in a NAIDOC Week quiz competition.

Students from Years 1–6 also learnt the song 'Calling Out to My People', which they learnt in their Music class and proudly performed at our special NAIDOC Week assembly.

The assembly was a wonderful culmination of the week. We were delighted to welcome Jessie Ward from Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company as our guest speaker and enjoyed special performances from Dianella Secondary College’s Warangka Dandjoo performers.

NAIDOC Week provided a valuable opportunity for our students to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and perspectives, while celebrating the strength and richness of the world’s oldest continuing cultures. On Tuesday 28 July, we celebrated 100 Days of School and recognised 100 days of learning, growth, friendships and achievement. Across the school, students embraced the occasion with creative costumes and a wide range of fun 100-themed activities, from maths challenges and fitness tasks to reflections on their learning and aspirations for the future.

It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm, creativity and school spirit on display. A huge thank you to our students, staff and families for helping make the day such a memorable celebration. Be sure to learn more about the day in our Week 3 school newsletter.

Tomorrow, Friday 7 August is Primary Principals' Day. This occasion is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the vital role that primary school principals and deputy principals play in the lives of students, staff, families, and the wider community. It acknowledges the dedication, leadership, and care they bring to creating safe, inclusive and engaging learning environments where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

From supporting student wellbeing and leading teaching and learning, to working alongside staff and partnering with families, principals and deputy principals make a significant contribution to the success of their school communities. Primary Principals' Day provides a chance to recognise these efforts and celebrate the positive impact of educational leadership.

International Friendship Day

Happy International Friendship Day to all students, staff and families in our community. Today is an important reminder of the role a school community provides in fostering strong, sustainable and respectful friendships. It promotes stronger social connections and safer, kinder, and more supportive classroom, building essential life skills like empathy, active listening, and cooperation. It enables collegiately, collaboration and wellbeing for staff and connection, compassion and support for families.
