Yesterday I had the privilege of sharing some pretty foundational milestones from an evolving body of work myself and my supervisors have affectionately nicknamed "Rounding the Corners" at the 2026 HEAL Future Leaders School, which explores how logo development became a deeply relational and methodological process within the STAUNCH project.

What began as a conversation around visual identity quickly evolved into something much larger: a story about collective identity, Indigenous research practices, alignment with Country(s), relational accountability, and how communities visually narrate themselves into being.

Importantly, the process itself became the methodology.

To wrap up our C R E - S T R I D E series, celebrating the release of the Centre for Research Excellence’s final report, we’re spotlighting an important part of the legacy STRIDE leaves behind.

Over the life of the collaboration, STRIDE supported 13 emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers — many of whom are now leading work in their own areas of expertise. Among them are researchers who’ve been recognised nationally, including a Eureka Prize finalist and a recent NHMRC PhD scholarship recipient, and many more.

We’re proud to have supported the next generation of health researchers and professionals, and incredibly proud of the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers who led so many of the projects and initiatives within STRIDE.

Real time project update (yes, it has taken that long)!

To answer the question I posed a couple of months ago:
- Proposal: 3,833 words
- Ethics draft application: 4,608 words

🏅 Ethics wins the word count competition 🏅

So now that the most finalised draft is done, what have I been working on while I've waited for supervisor feedback to be extra ready for application submission?

I've been working on other required documents to support Burrubadi's ethics application! ✨

This includes:
1. Participant Information Sheet and Informed Consent bundle (the cover page photo in this post features Janagan - The Seven Sisters),

2. Data management plan,

3. Distress protocol, and,

4. Research Agreements with three community run organisations/partners to be.

My biggest learning so far has been the realisation of how much goes into an ethics application, and how important it is to have a PhD proposal that is solid in context, research and thinking... If you have that, then writing an ethics application is much easier 😌

The next steps after this will be to start looking into developing the website/alternative publication journal and undertaking some kind of systematic review!

I'm working on my first ever ethics application for this project and today I managed to type out more words than I thought I had the brain capacity for.

I then compared it to my original PhD proposal (because the foundational thinking is ALWAYS helpful to include in any application!).

Which document do you think has the higher word count?
FYI: they both have over 3,000 words 📑💻

In late July a group of higher degree by research (HDR) students from UCRH joined with rural colleagues from the School of Rural Health to travel to Sydney for the Faculty of Medicine and Health HDR Conference.

Thank you Jeremy Heathcote (OAM) for not only opening the University of Sydney FMH Rural HDR Student Showcase with acknowledging beautiful Burramattagal Country we were gathering on and reminding us of the importance of including our First Nations communities in our research but for also capturing this first really official kick-off moment for this PhD project! 💪🏾

Thank you to all of my colleagues and friends who sat through hours of prior presentations to watch the Burrubadi project presentation during one of the last big sessions of the day - I am deeply honoured to have not only your time but your words of encouragement 🌺
