West Wyalong Show
Over the past week, students from West Wyalong High School have actively participated in a variety of events at the West Wyalong Show. A dedicated team of over 20 student volunteers helped set up the showgrounds on Tuesday, 8th September. The students arranged seating, tables, chairs, pavilion displays, and the school exhibit, demonstrating great initiative by assisting wherever needed.
Show day saw the school enter a team of 10 students into the junior sheep and fleece judging competitions. In the fleece judging, students carefully examined and ranked four fleeces from 1st to 4th place. They then presented their rankings and reasoning verbally to Jackie Thompson, representative from Moses and Sons. Congratulations to Suzi Riach, who received first place, and Abbey Steele, who was awarded second place. Both students showed excellent visual assessment skills and confidence during their presentations.
Next, the students participated in the junior sheep judging. They gained hands-on experience evaluating four Merino rams, considering factors such as wool quality, structure, carcass, and breed conformity. Drawing on skills developed in previous workshops, the students ranked the rams from 1st to 4th place. Bill Buttonshaw judged their confidence and handling skills, selecting a top three who then gave verbal explanations of their decisions. Suzi Riach earned first place, while Abbey Steele and Arie Beckett tied for second.
Following the success in junior judging, attention turned to the school’s other entries. In the poultry section, our Sussex hen claimed first place, and our Australorp hen secured second place in their respective classes. Additionally, eggs from our Hy-Line hens were entered in a competitive class and awarded second place.
After the show concluded, another volunteer crew of over 20 students assisted with pack down. They returned seating to storage sheds, cleaned the grounds, and packed up the school display. The Show Committee generously thanked everyone with a BBQ, which was warmly appreciated by all.
A big thank you to all students who contributed their time and effort as volunteers. We are also grateful to the West Wyalong Show Committee for giving us the opportunity to be part of such a valued local event. Thanks to Benjamin Cattle for driving the bus, Mr Lees for supervising the student volunteers, and Ms Ackland for her outstanding art pieces on display, as well as her supervision and support throughout the three days.

RIEP– Fire Up Your Career West Wyalong 2026
Monday 31st August and Tuesday 1st September saw the launch of the RIEP Central West Plains Fire Up Your Career Program. Designed to attract young people into the much-needed Emergency Services sector and co-designed with Fire and Rescue NSW, the 2-day program in West Wyalong proved highly successful.

Day 1 saw an adaptation of the Girls on Fire Program. Traditionally an initiative designed to create confidence and resilience in young women, the modification saw an expansion to an all-gender program with a career development focus. Enriching the delivery was comprehensive support from Fire and Rescue NSW, the Rural Fire Service and the SES.

Day 2 directly connected students with Fire and Rescue NSW recruitment, trainers, senior representatives and local officers as well as senior officers, local officers and volunteers from the NSW Rural Fire Service. Students gained a clear understanding of the positions available, how to apply, what the process entails, and how both they and their community will benefit. Additionally, volunteering opportunities were detailed including the employment, community and university early entry advantages this provides.

On both days, the services could not have been more hands on. From conducting relays in full kit to putting out oil fires to VR experiences to fighting simulated fires in full PPE in enclosed, smoke-filled rooms, pulling out casualties and providing CPR.

Of the 25 young men and women participating, 1 is signing up and another 6 are actively pursuing volunteering opportunities.

💦💦 Water Back On 💦💦

I would like to advise our school community that water services have been restored to the school and we are back to business as usual.

I would like to thank our students, staff and community for their support in keeping the doors open and ensuring continuity of learning for our students. I would like to also thank the tradespeople we have had onsite for priortising these works and getting us back to normal operations.

RU OK? DAY
RUOK Day is coming up next week! Our Year 9 Leadership team is taking the lead in organising a special day to check in with the WWHS students and staff. They have put up an R U OK sign outside Roundabout Bakery to spread the message, and on Thursday, 10th September, they will be reaching out to the community to have meaningful conversations and support one another. Remember, a simple chat can make a big difference – let’s look out for each other!

Fishing In Forbes
The Learning Support students had an exciting day fishing in Forbes last Friday! With beautiful weather and wonderful support from DPI staff, students learned how to assemble a reel, put on the line, attach weights and hooks, and the techniques for fishing. They also got hands-on help baiting their hooks with worms and corn. Grady and Zayden both caught fish, and although they initially struggled to bring them ashore, near the end of the morning Zayden successfully landed a fish, sparking lots of excitement among everyone. A fantastic day full of learning and fun!

💦No water on site at WWHS💦

We would like to advise our community that we currently do not have working water services at the high school. We have plumbers working hard to restore services to the school soon. Please rest assured that we have plenty of bottled water available to students and staff. We also have access to the toilet block at McAllister Oval for students and staff. We would like to thank Bland Shire Council for supporting our school through this issue.

We apologise for the inconvenience this will have caused today and we hope that services will be restored for tomorrow.
