🎉🌿 Celebrating 120 Years of Learning and Growth: Flashback to NAIDOC Week this term at Caversham Primary School 🌿🎉

This year marks a significant milestone for Cavy - our 120th anniversary! As we reflect on our rich history, we are proud to share how our school community is honouring NAIDOC Week with a deep respect for the First Nations peoples and their cultures.

In the early days of our school, the acknowledgment and celebration of Aboriginal cultures was limited. Today, we embrace a more inclusive and respectful approach to learning about and celebrating the rich heritage of Australia's First Nations peoples.

This NAIDOC Week, we were privileged to host Milliyaan Aboriginal Services, who guided us through a meaningful smoking ceremony. The ceremony helped us connect with the traditions of the Noongar people and honour their land.

Our younger students engaged in a series of activities that celebrated Australian native animals. They learned the Noongar names for these animals, created tracks in the sand, and enjoyed crafting activities. Each of these experiences provided a hands-on way to understand and appreciate the connections between these animals and Aboriginal culture.

The older students had the opportunity to work with Milliyaan Aboriginal Services to make a traditional hunting tool. This activity not only taught valuable skills but also highlighted the ingenuity and resourcefulness of Aboriginal technology and craftsmanship.

The learning and appreciation of Aboriginal cultures doesn’t stop there at Cavy! Each day in our classrooms, we continue to explore and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our community. We are committed to ongoing education and respect, integrating these valuable lessons into our daily learning experiences.

As we celebrate our 120-year journey, we are grateful for the opportunity to deepen our understanding and respect for the Noongar culture and beyond. NAIDOC Week is a time to reflect, learn, and celebrate, and we look forward to continuing this important work.

Here’s to many more years of learning, growth, and celebration of the diverse cultures that enrich our school and our nation.
