We did so much during the school holidays, and one of our absolute favourites was our Mini Patisserie Jellycat-inspired Workshop! 🥐🍰💕

A little painting, a little high tea and lots of creativity! 🫖🎨

Our young artists had the sweetest time painting their own adorable patisserie creations, exploring colours, adding tiny details and bringing their little characters to life.

We love how a fun theme can become an opportunity to practise painting skills, make creative decisions and express individual ideas.

And of course, enjoying high tea together made the experience even more special!

Not every artwork looks beautiful halfway through. And that’s exactly where some of the most important learning happens. 👀🎨

This Term 4, we’re challenging our young artists to work on ONE artwork across THREE lessons.

That’s 4.5 hours of observing, planning, experimenting, refining and making creative decisions.

And for many children, it’s a big learning curve.

We’re so used to seeing children complete an artwork in one sitting. But learning to stay with something, even when it doesn’t look the way you imagined, is a whole different skill.

There will be moments when they want to rush.

Moments when they think they’re finished.

And moments when they feel like starting all over again.

But that’s where we come in as art educators.

We’re teaching them to look again, think deeper, solve problems and understand that a good artwork takes more than just a good idea.

It takes patience, observation, technique and the willingness to keep going.

Because art isn’t just about the finished piece. It’s a decision-making process.

And sometimes the biggest growth happens in the messy middle. 💛

We can’t wait to see how their artworks develop over these three lessons.

“My child isn’t naturally artistic.”

We hear this sometimes, and it always makes us think about how differently we approach art compared with other subjects.

We don’t expect children to know how to swim before swimming lessons.

Or to play the piano before music lessons.

So why do we sometimes expect children to already know how to draw before starting art classes?

Drawing is a learnable skill.

Children can develop their ability to observe, understand shapes, recognise proportions and use different techniques.

Of course, every child learns at their own pace.

And their interests, strengths and creative styles will be different.

But they all deserve the opportunity to learn.

At our studio, we teach children practical artistic skills while giving them room to experiment, make decisions and develop their own ideas.

“Can I have another piece of paper? I messed it up.”

Sound familiar? 🎨

Some children want to start their drawings again the moment something doesn’t look right.

And while starting fresh isn’t necessarily a bad thing, there’s an important skill we can help them develop.

Learning how to work through a problem.

Sometimes a drawing needs a small adjustment, not a completely new beginning.

In our studio, we teach children how to observe what’s happening in their artwork and identify what they can change.

Maybe the proportions need adjusting.
Maybe a shape needs refining.
Maybe they need to try a different technique.

And sometimes, starting again really is the best decision.

The important part is helping children understand their options.

“What part isn’t working the way you wanted?”

Then explore one possible solution together.

There’s a difference between completing an art activity and learning how to create art. 🎨

Both can be enjoyable, but they don’t always offer the same learning experience.

In our studio, we believe children deserve more than simply following steps to recreate a finished picture.

We teach them how to observe.

How to understand shapes and proportions.

How to work with different materials.

How to explore colour and composition.

And importantly, how to make their own creative decisions.

Because art is a decision-making process.

Every line, colour and brushstroke involves a choice.

Sometimes children need a demonstration.

Sometimes they need help understanding a technique.

And sometimes they need the freedom to experiment and discover what works for themselves.

Our goal isn’t to produce a room full of identical paintings.

It’s to help children develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to create independently.

Art is a decision-making process. 🎨

And it’s something we wish more parents understood.

When a child creates an artwork, they’re constantly making choices.

Where should I begin?
What colours should I use?
How can I make this work?
Should I change something?
When is my artwork finished?

Every decision invites them to observe, think, experiment and solve problems.

And not every decision will work out the first time.

That’s part of learning too.

In our studio, we don’t just teach children how to draw and paint. We guide them in developing the skills to make thoughtful creative decisions.

We teach techniques, encourage exploration and give children room to think for themselves.

Because the value of art education isn’t only in the finished painting.

It’s also in the thinking that happens along the way.

Next time your child asks, “What should I do next?”, instead of giving them the answer straight away, ask:

“What do you think your artwork needs?”

How to keep a little artist busy?

Give them a cardboard box and see where their imagination takes them.

It’s funny how children can have a room full of toys, yet find endless possibilities in an empty box.

A little cutting, painting, building and problem-solving later, they’ve created something entirely their own.

And that’s what we love about art. Children aren’t just keeping busy. They’re thinking, experimenting and learning along the way.

Sometimes the best creative activities start with the simplest things.

Who else has a child who loves the box more than what’s inside?
