A thought from our Trainer Lawrence Dunstall

The most common misconception I hear about during the SRT courses is that we have to set our controls at maximum to get the best results. This could be air pressure, feed pressure or rotation speed.

The desire to drill faster is always with us, it's human nature, to achieve to go above and beyond.

So many drillers seem to think that flat out is the only speed.
If we take a step back and look at how the energy is created, in the case of DTH we take diesel and air turn into a rotational energy source in the terms of a crankshaft, which then turns and air compressor to generate compressed air. That air is delivered to the drill string. (All be it not very efficiently)

We then convert the compressed air from potential energy to kinetic energy when the piston gains momentum. On impact the piston transmits the kinetic energy in the form of an energy wave that passes through the drill bit into the rock face.

Remember that "Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another.” (Albert Einstein). The first law of thermodynamics.

If we do not use all the energy available to break the rock, it will be transformed into other energies such as heat and other bad harmonics. Poor drilling practices
All too often we set and forget or have preconceived ideas. When by winding back some of the pressures the energy won't be lost to heat Etc. Often when we do this the pe*******on rate will increase as we have found the sweet spot for energy transfer, not loss.

At SRT's DTH course we show our candidates the importance of energy wave cycles transferring through the piston and the bit and back.
