𝗧𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘆𝗺𝘆 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 - 𝗟𝘆𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁

Most of the Weipa North streets named by Comalco staff in the mid to late 1960s appear to have been connected with regional place-names. Constructed about 1967, this court probably derives its name from a creek on 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘢 𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘴 station, which flows northwards to join the Wenlock River (formerly Batavia River).

The creek was given the name Lydia by the surveyor John Thomas Embley when he conducted a traverse of the Batavia River and the 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘢 𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘴 cattle station run survey (survey plan C.153.382) or when he surveyed the 𝘠𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘴 cattle station (survey plan C.153.381), both in 1885. It is likely that John Embley named the creek after his sister-in-law, Lydia Matilda Jane Embley (née Cox), who married John’s brother Dr Edward Henry Embley in 1883. Edward Embley was a prominent Melbourne anaesthetist and John named Edward River after him.

Works at the Rocky Point Community Youth Precinct will continue over the coming months as crews progress through the next stages of construction.

Once complete, the precinct will provide a dedicated space designed to support connection, recreation and community activities for local young people and families. 🌴

𝗧𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘆𝗺𝘆 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 - 𝗠𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱

Following the discovery of commercial bauxite deposits in the Weipa region by Consolidated Zinc Pty Ltd (CZP) geologist Harry Evans in July/October 1955, the company planned a major exploration programme to determine the extent of the ore resources. The first Enterprise Exploration Pty Ltd crew, comprising Brian McNiece (site engineer-in-charge), Jack Springall, Slim Alexander and Ton Gifford arrived at Weipa Presbyterian Mission (now Napranum) 70 years ago, in July 1956. The crew set up tents near the mission with support from superintendent Jimmy Winn. By August, a location for the exploration base had been established adjacent to the Weipa airstrip, east of the mission compound. The site overlooked the Munding area on the Embley River. The name Munding (the “u” is pronounced like the “u” in put) is an Alngith name reportedly for a species of shellfish found in the sandy mud flats of the river at that location.

The Enterprise camp near Munding became known as “Top Camp” and grew to be a busy site providing accommodation for the exploration aviation, drilling and survey crews, a small power station, a medical first aid building and a dining mess, as well as being a meteorological recording station and bauxite sampling and testing facility. In 1961, Comalco took over the Top Camp operations until the camp closure in 1967. At its peak, Top Camp had a post office and an Ansett ANA booking office.

Named in 1970 during an eastwards expansion of the Weipa North township, Munding Road is a reminder of Top Camp and its significance to the era of exploration and planning which led to the development of Weipa’s mining operations in the 1960s. With grateful acknowledgement to the late Frank Isenbert for generously allowing his colour slides to be copied for the Cape York Collection and to the late Michael Robert O’Reilly, who created the first album of these historical images for the Collection in 1980.
