Did you know you can extract iron using the chemicals found in a matchstick?
Our Year 10 students recently put this to the test during a fascinating Chemistry practical.

By heating iron oxide with the chemicals from a matchstick, students observed a displacement (reduction) reaction that produced iron metal. To test whether the reaction had been successful, they used magnets to see if any iron had been formed. If the magnet attracted the product, it was evidence that iron had been successfully extracted.

Hands-on experiments like this give our students the opportunity to explore chemical reactions in a practical and engaging way, bringing the science they learn in the classroom to life.

Year 11 & 12 Dance students have been fortunate to participate in a series of Broadway sessions with local choreographer Sinead Harte. Over the past 10 weeks Sinead has directed the students through a high energy dance routine. Students have stepped up to the choreographic challenge and enjoyed learning Broadway dance techniques.

This week, we are celebrating Science Week with plenty of exciting, hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and encourage our students to explore the world of science!

This morning at the gates, students had the opportunity to take part in a range of fun activities, including:

🫙 Guess how many seeds are in the jar
🌿 Germinate your own seeds

There has been a range of exciting experiments happening throughout the week, giving students the opportunity to investigate, experiment and discover as we celebrate all things SCIENCE!

Congratulations to Year 11 Design Photography student Sophie for being selected into the DoE Young Originals Art Exhibition. Her monochromatic digital work ‘Drip’ plays on the visual interest of the inks flowing lines and the contrast of the surrounding void.

Keeping mobile phones and personal devices switched off and locked away during the school day helps create a positive learning environment where everyone can stay focused, engaged, and connected with the people around them.

Making Money Work Workshop

Our Year 11 and 12 Business students took part in the Making Money Work Workshop, presented by Talk Money. This allowed students to build valuable knowledge to help prepare them for the world of work.

Students explored important topics including:
✔️ Workers' rights
✔️ The differences and advantages of part-time and casual employment
✔️ Work classifications

Understanding workplace rights and responsibilities is an essential life skill, and this workshop has equipped our students with practical knowledge to help them make informed decisions as they begin their employment journey.

Our Year 8 CASP students have been participating in the CO3 Workshop with presenters Frankie and Tom. They are exploring emotions through body language using facial expression and gestures through movements. In these pictures, students revisited movements that depict exhaustion.

These workshops will refine their performance skills for the end of year showcase.

Robotics students put their coding skills to the test! We attached a colour sensor to our driving bases and used coloured blocks to map out a path for our robots to follow.

Coding is one of the most challenging aspects of Robotics Club, so it took plenty of teamwork, problem-solving and persistence to get our driving bases moving in the right direction.

It was rewarding to see our hard work pay off, and we're excited to continue building our confidence and strengthening the fundamental skills that form the foundation of robotics.
