Horses Hate Surprise Parties: Equitation Science for Young Riders.

A little book recommendation for all of my riders and parents

My copy is certainly well loved, as you can tell by the curled corners! I recently had a mum tell me she’d bought it for her daughter and it made me realise I probably haven’t shared it enough.

Even though it’s written for young riders, I think it’s a great read for anyone wanting to dip their toe into the world of equitation science. It gives a really simple introduction to horse behaviour, how horses learn, and why they respond the way they do.
It’s also a great little head start before coming along for lessons with your horse at Alba View.
Definitely worth a read. 🐴

School Horse Riding Lessons – STILL FULL

Last year we downsized our number of school horses and changed direction and to also focus coaching riders with their own horses, our current school-horse lesson places are still fully booked, with a waitlist.

We have a few bookings available for riders who have their own horses and would like lessons at Alba View Equestrian.

This is something we teach our riders from day one at Alba. Our riders of all ages, even those as young as five are encouraged to avoid labels like “naughty” stubborn” or “rude” when talking about their horses.
Instead, we encourage them to describe what the horse is actually doing and ask why it might be happening.

Is the horse confused? Worried? Uncomfortable? Has it understood what we are asking?

The words we use matter, because they can influence how we respond to the horse. 🐴

🐴 “Naughty.” “Stubborn.” “Rude.” They might seem like harmless words, but could they actually change how we treat horses?

At the ISES 2026 Conference, Susie Catherall Ostler presented “Words matter: The prevalence and impact of negative emotive language in the equine industry.”

In a survey of 355 participants, every participant had heard negative emotive language used to describe horse behaviour, and 97% admitted using it themselves.

But the most striking finding was what happened when researchers changed only the language used to describe a horse’s behaviour. Participants shown descriptions using negative emotive language were significantly more likely to suggest sedation and, in some scenarios, positive punishment, despite seeing the exact same video of the horse.

People who reported using this type of language more frequently were also less likely to suggest giving the horse time, considering their emotional state or physical discomfort, or using desensitisation.

The takeaway is simple but powerful: the words we use can shape the decisions we make.

Instead of labelling a horse as naughty, stubborn or rude, asking why they are behaving that way could lead us towards more horse centred responses.

Lei Chen is a racehorse owner who dreams of one day strapping his own horse for a race. He recently took the first step to achieving his goal when he attended the Horse Handling Workshop with Horse Safety Australia, held at The Riding Patch.

When Lei was asked who he would recommend the workshop to, he said: “If you love horses, this is the course for you!”
