KWS believes in fostering and supporting all forms of music, so this year for the Victorian Bands' League State Championships, the band offered to cover entrance fees for small ensembles made up of members from KCB and KWS.
As a result, we were proud to have 5 groups compete yesterday as part of various small ensemble categories. In Open Duet/Trio we had the Pied Pipers, a fabulous flute duet. Open Ensembles featured the Knox Clarinet Collective, a small clarinet chamber ensemble who did a great job, placing second in their category with 94🥈. Finally in the Open Quartet/Quintet section we had three groups; Polished Brass - brass quintet, Saxual Healing - saxophone quartet, and placing third in this category with 95 was Splitting Airs - flute quartet 🥉.
Congratulations to all the groups for getting involved and putting in the work to choose music, rehearse together and put on performances you can all be very proud of. And of course, for coming up with such creative names for your groups.
Huge thanks as always to the VBL for providing these opportunities and our band’s indomitable administrator, amyyinpoh for her work in setting up and entering the groups.

Congratulations to KWS/KCB superstar Kiahna Ridley for another stellar performance at the Victorian Bands' League State Championships! Kiahna placed first in Junior Tenor Trombone, making her the 2026 State Champion 🏆
She wasn’t done though, going on to place third in the Open Tenor Trombone category as well🥉
We’re exceptionally lucky to have such a talented and delightful trombonist playing with both our ensembles, especially so early in her musical journey! Well done on another fantastic set of performances

Our KCB french horn section is on the rise, tripling in size, from one to three members this year! French horn is such a beautiful instrument, but the price of buying one can be prohibitive for many potential players. We’d like to thank the Knox City Council for their support in the purchase of two new horns for KWS, allowing us to give more people the opportunity to continue developing their skills.
This instrument purchase project has been supported by a grant from the Knox City Council’s Community Development Fund.

KWS’s epic journey took us from Sailing with Whales, all the way through Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral, with a quick stop in NYC with the Jets and the Sharks.
Thanks again to Matthew Holzinger for stepping up to the role of conductor this term, he did a fantastic job and we’re sure this won’t be the last time he’s at the KWS helm!
And a final thanks to all those who came to support the concert, we hope you had just as much fun as we did 🐋 🏰

KCB had a fantastic time gliding across the Alaskan Snow, listening to some Travelin’ Music and seeing the stunning Northern Lights yesterday!
For such a young band, KCB is sounding fantastic and we couldn’t be prouder of yesterday’s performance.
Thanks to all of those who came along to support the bands, it was a great atmosphere and we hope to see you at the next one 🏔️

At KWS, we aim to provide opportunities for our members to go beyond playing. At the upcoming Journey concert, three of the four conductors are also current performers with KCB and KWS.
Doug Lewis is bringing his fantastic Highvale Primary Band. Sion Boomsma has been the Musical Director of KCB since its inception in late 2024. Matthew Holzinger has been guest-conducting KWS this term, taking a break from playing a variety of instruments to take a turn on the podium.
Thank you to our fantastic supporters, Harris Blake and Parsons, Fine Music, Knox City Council and Wantirna College for allowing us to provide opportunities like this to our community.

Knox Wind Symphony and Knox Concert Band will be joined by the Highvale Primary School Concert Band and Highvale Primary School Symphonic Band, and we are so excited to be a part of these young musicians’ musical journey in a small way.
