๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฅ‹ Stuck doesnโ€™t mean finished!

Sometimes things donโ€™t go your way. You get stuck. Something feels hard. Your first try doesnโ€™t work. ๐ŸŒฑ

Martial arts gives kids a chance to practise what comes next: Stay calm. Think. Keep trying. ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŽฏ

Those moments help build resilience to face a challenge without giving up straight away.

Because getting stuck is okay.

Learning how to keep going is what matters. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿฅ‹

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ๐Ÿฅ‹ Self-Defence Isnโ€™t About Winning the Fight

At Kando, we use a simple 3-step mantra when learning self-defence:

1๏ธโƒฃ Minimise the Damage
2๏ธโƒฃ Improve Your Position
3๏ธโƒฃ Get Safe

You can see all three in this drill. ๐Ÿ‘€

First, she protects herself from the punches while caught in the headlock. ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

Then, she escapes and improves her position. ๐Ÿฅ‹๐Ÿ’ช

But it doesnโ€™t finish there.

Once sheโ€™s free, she steps back, creates space and uses her voice:

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ โ€œSTOP! LEAVE ME ALONE!โ€

The goal of self-defence isnโ€™t to stay and keep fighting.

Itโ€™s to protect yourself, get into a better position, and get safe. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

Three simple steps that help give purpose to the techniques we practise. ๐Ÿฅ‹๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฅ‹ We Donโ€™t Expect Kids to Get Everything Right

Learning something new can be hard.

Sometimes it takes one try. Sometimes it takes twenty! ๐Ÿ˜…

Thatโ€™s why we put so much value on effort. ๐ŸŒฑ

We want our students to learn that itโ€™s okay when something doesnโ€™t work straight away.

Listen. Try. Make mistakes. Learn. Then have another go. ๐Ÿ’ช

Because when kids learn that improvement takes effort, they start becoming more willing to stick with things when they get difficult. ๐ŸŒŸ

Getting it right feels great.

But being willing to keep working towards it matters too. ๐Ÿฅ‹๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿฅ‹ When the Student Gets to Give Out the Push-Ups!

One of the best prizes on our Open Day Prize Wheelโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ‘€

๐ŸŽก โ€œGive a Sempai 10 Push-Ups!โ€ ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ˜‚

The excitement of finding a Sempai, counting every rep, and then feeling VERY pleased with the result. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ™Œ

Sometimes itโ€™s the little moments that make the best memories at the dojo. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿฅ‹

Weโ€™re pretty sure Sempai Meg enjoyed her prize tooโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿฅ‹๐ŸŒŸ What Are the 3 Aโ€™s of Grading?

What do we look for when deciding if a student is ready to grade?

We use the 3 Aโ€™s! ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐ŸŽฏ Ability โ€“ demonstrating the techniques weโ€™ve been practising.
๐Ÿ“… Attendance โ€“ training consistently so thereโ€™s time to learn and improve.
๐Ÿค Attitude โ€“ training safely and working well with partners.

All three are important. ๐ŸŒŸ

Grading isnโ€™t just about knowing the techniques or getting to the next belt as quickly as possible. Itโ€™s about being ready for that next step in the journey. ๐Ÿฅ‹๐Ÿ’ช

Keep training, keep learning, and keep improving! ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐ŸŒฑ โ€œI canโ€™t do it.โ€ โžก๏ธ โ€œIโ€™ll try again.โ€ ๐Ÿฅ‹๐Ÿ’ช

That small change can mean so much.

Kids wonโ€™t get everything right the first time. And thatโ€™s okay! ๐Ÿ™Œ

What matters is learning to have another go. To make a mistake, reset, and try again. ๐ŸŒŸ

Over time, those little moments help build confidence and resilience.

Kids start believing they can handle things that are hard. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿฅ‹

Every attempt is progress. Keep going! ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿฅ‹๐Ÿ’ช Discipline Is Built in the Little Moments

Discipline isnโ€™t about getting everything right. Itโ€™s learning to show up, listen, put in the effort, and keep trying. ๐ŸŒฑ

Some days training feels easy. Other days it takes a little more determination. Those are the moments that matter. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Every time a child sticks with something thatโ€™s challenging, theyโ€™re practicing more than martial arts.

Theyโ€™re learning that progress takes effort, patience, and consistency. ๐Ÿฅ‹๐ŸŒŸ

Little moments. Repeated over time. Thatโ€™s how discipline grows. ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ”ซ๐Ÿ’ฅ NERF WARS at Kando! ๐ŸŽฏ๐Ÿ”ฅ

What an awesome afternoon! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Yesterday our students swapped their gloves and pads for Nerf blasters and took over the dojo for an action-packed Nerf Wars event! ๐Ÿ”ซ๐Ÿ’จ

Plenty of running, dodging, teamwork, laughs and some VERY serious Nerf battles! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐ŸŽฏ

Events like these are such a fun chance for our students to hang out, build friendships and enjoy being part of the Kando community away from regular training. ๐Ÿฅ‹๐Ÿ’›

Thanks to everyone who joined us!

We hope you had as much fun as we did! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ”ฅ Challenge Each Other. Learn Together. ๐Ÿฅ‹๐Ÿ‘Š

Last weekend our adults hit the mats for a Sparring Open Mat! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Sparring gives us the chance to test our skills, work with different partners, and find the areas we still need to improve. ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŽฏ

Itโ€™s not about winning every exchange.

Itโ€™s about learning, adapting, and helping each other get better. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฅ‹

Great rounds, great energy, and plenty of lessons to take back into training. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Awesome work, team! ๐Ÿ‘Š

One of the most common things new parents tell us is:

โ€œMy child struggles to focus.โ€ ๐Ÿ’ญ

The good news is that focus isnโ€™t something children either have or donโ€™t have.

Itโ€™s a skill that develops over time. โณ

In every martial arts class, students practise listening, following instructions, waiting for their turn and staying engaged with the task in front of them.

Theyโ€™re actively involved in an environment that rewards attention, effort and consistency. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Over time, many parents tell us they begin to notice the difference outside the dojo, too.

Whether itโ€™s getting ready for school with less reminding, sticking with a task for longer, or feeling more confident tackling homework, those small improvements can make a big impact!

Every child develops at their own pace, but creating opportunities to practise focus every week can make a real difference.
