First Aid refreshed ✅ 🩹

Being an equestrian inevitably comes with risk. We work with animals more than 10x our size, and even when we do everything right, things can still go wrong.

For me, especially as a coach and professional within this sport, having current first aid knowledge isn’t just a box to tick — it’s another way I can better support the people around me and feel confident responding if I’m ever needed.

Growing up with a dad who is a critical care paramedic definitely taught me the value that even basic first aid knowledge can have. In those rare moments where it matters, knowing what to do can make a real difference.

I was due to refresh my Provide First Aid certificate, so I recently completed it again through St John. The course was practical, clear and incredibly worthwhile — particularly the hands-on component.

If you spend a lot of time around horses and haven’t done a first aid course before, I’d strongly encourage you to consider it. We put so much effort into keeping our horses safe — it’s worth investing in the skills to look after each other too. 🤍🐴

STOP saving poles for “pole work” 👀

When you put poles out… do you actually know why you’re using them?

Are they just something to ride over — or are they giving you a clear, measurable way to improve what you’re already working on?

In this exercise, we’re using them as clear markers for transitions. Having a physical point to ride towards makes it much easier to plan, prepare and assess whether the transition actually happened where you intended it to.

Poles can be great for working on:
→ Accuracy
→ Preparation
→ Rhythm
→ Balance
→ Straightness
→ Rider awareness

Sometimes adding just one or two poles can turn a basic flatwork exercise into something much more measurable — for both horse and rider.

Don’t just ride over your poles. Use them with purpose. 🤎

Want some new ideas to bring into your own rides? Lessons are available at TNE or off-property — send me a message to book in. 🐴

Yesterday marked the end of an era as I dropped Amour back to Paula Reynolds….

I am beyond heartbroken to see this chapter close, the joy this special little mare brought me was immense. It may not have been straightforward at times, but what a gift she gave by giving me a handful of incredible rides back inside the showjump ring- my most favourite place to be. It truely was such a special partnership, one that had me constantly learning and growing.

It’s going to take a while to get used to not seeing her face in the paddock each day, but getting to see her reunite with her daughters definitely softened the blow!

A big thank you to all the people in my life who supported us both over the past year, Izabelle Dobson Sophie Warren and Gina; you three were especially invaluable.

I cannot thank her and her wonderful owner enough for the past year. Grateful doesn’t even cover what I feel to have had that time with her. 🤍
