Nola's Up-cycling Sewing

Nola's Up-cycling Sewing Redesign your wardrobe by up-cycling existing clothing into new creative fashion. I then worked in the Clothing Industry in Sydney and Melbourne.

By doing this you will help to provide a more sustainable environment, whilst providing you with the knowledge and skills to continue onto future creations. I completed a Diploma of Fashion Design and Production at the Gordon Technical College. After some years I decided to move back to the country where I worked for 20years at the Sunraysia Institute of TAFE in Mildura, in the Clothing/Fashion De

partment. At the same time I did Dressmaking for individual clients. In 2003 when the Clothing/Fashion Department was closed, along with many others in the state, I retrained in Hospitality and moved into the secondary system, where I have taught Hospitality and Textiles. I loved my time in the Clothing/Fashion Department at TAFE where I trained hundreds of students. Some of which I have remained friends. Even then, we considered re-cycling of clothing and created new fashions. Now more than ever re-cycling is important. I would welcome this opportunity to impart my knowledge and skills to you, in a way I am re-cycling myself to a new group of clients. I moved to Wangaratta 3 years ago. I have family here and in Melbourne. I see Wangaratta as my home, in an ideal location, in a beautiful setting. I can help you explore your creativity, in a less regimented way, as I hope to make it enjoyable, whilst being sustainable and environmentally friendly.

MEASUREMENTS, for success you should measure your body correctly. The 2 most important measurements are bust or chest and hip.
For a top, blouse or shirt, measure your bust or chest, straight with a tape measure around the fullest part. Make sure it is level front and back. Don't have the back lower than the front.
For a skirt or pants you should measure at the fullest point around the persons bottom. Both measurements should be held firm but not tight.

TIP, hold the tape measure together at the point of the measurement, then move the tape measure up or down the body about 5cm. If you have to release the tape, this is the fullest point.

PATTERNS, write down these measurements for the next step of altering the pattern.

Right! You have your project, your sewing machine and now you need to test the sewing machine to see if it functions correctly.
Thread your machine (top and bobbin), use a scrap of fabric and folded in half. Test the straight, reverse and zig-zag stitches.
If there is a problem, most times it is the threading. Either check your machine manual or google sewing machine threading. There are plenty of YouTube clips, most machines are the same.
TIP. Once the machine is threaded draw the threads under the machine foot, to the back. Place your fabric under the foot and lower gently in place. Then used the hand wheel (side of machine) to put the needle into the fabric. That's it, just sew!!

It's mid winter and time to gather together those garments that need altering and the fabrics stuck in cupboards. Put them all out on display, so you can see them.
Start to plan your sewing treats! Not tasks or jobs, sewing is a pleasure and a skill for life. Pick one item to do, when ready.

Those who have studied Clothing/fashion, would remember making samples like this 2 piece collar. I made this one in about 1989, I still have most of my samples today!
