🚒🔥 Year 3 Fire and Rescue Visit! 🔥🚒

Today, our Year 3 students enjoyed a fantastic visit from the Hope Valley Fire and Rescue Service!

As part of their community engagement program, the firefighters spoke to students about fire safety and prevention, while also sharing important information about the vital role firefighters play in our community.

Students rotated through some exciting hands-on activities, including:

🚒 Exploring the fire truck
💦 Using the fire hose
🧑‍🚒 Racing a firefighter to see who could put on their safety gear the fastest!

Everyone had a great time and learned many valuable fire-safety lessons along the way.

A huge thank you to the Hope Valley Fire and Rescue Service for providing such a fun, informative and memorable experience for our students. We loved learning from our local heroes! ❤️🔥

Did You Know? Not All Screen Time Is the Same

Many parents are understandably concerned about the impact of screen time on children's development. What is often overlooked, however, is that the quality of screen use matters far more than simply the amount of time spent on a device.

Research highlighting the negative effects of screen time commonly focuses on passive consumption, such as watching videos, scrolling social media, playing video games (often unsupervised / outside their age restriction) or using highly stimulating entertainment apps designed to keep users engaged.

At school, we use iPads differently. Rather than consuming content, students use technology to:

✅ Create presentations and digital projects
✅ Record and reflect on their learning using multimedia (microphone/voice)
✅ Collaborate with classmates
✅ Research and investigate questions
✅ Develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills
✅ Access learning tools that support individual needs

Think of it this way: not all screen time is equal. Just as there is a difference between healthy food and junk food, there is a difference between passively consuming content and actively using technology as a tool for learning.

Technology at Honeywood Primary School is carefully integrated into a balanced learning environment. Students continue to engage in:
Handwriting and written work
Reading physical books
Class discussions and collaboration
Hands-on learning experiences
Physical activity and outdoor play

Our goal is not to increase screen time for its own sake. Instead, we aim to equip students with the digital literacy, creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills they will need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

📚 A Special Book Week Visit! 📚

Last Friday, four of our junior classes were treated to a very special Book Week visit from Honeywood parent and published author, Rebecca Grant.

Rebecca shared one of her wonderful books with each class and led the students through a fun activity connected to the story. Students thoroughly enjoyed hearing Rebecca’s entertaining books:

🧪 Potion Commotion – It starts with a witch, a dragon and a potion.
It ends with a commotion! Prepare to be charmed by this story of a spell gone wrong and the whirlwind of magical mayhem that follows.

🦛 How Do You Hide a Hippo? – How DO you hide a ginormous hippo? The shed is too small, the beds are too low, and the hippo? He's not great at blending in. A playful story with a cosy twist … this hippo might be fluffier than he looks!

Rebecca also joined students in the library during first break, chatting with them as they searched for hippos cleverly hidden throughout the library and participated in fun craft activities.

We sincerely thank Rebecca for generously sharing her time, creativity and love of storytelling with our students. It was a wonderful way to celebrate Book Week and inspire our young readers! 💙📖

📚 Book Week Dress-Up Day 📚

Last Friday, Honeywood came alive with an incredible collection of book characters for our Book Week Dress-Up Day!

It was fantastic to see so many students and staff embracing the celebration and dressing as characters from their favourite books. The creativity, enthusiasm and effort that went into the costumes were wonderful to see.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so much fun and brought the magic of reading to life! 📖✨

Please note that, in line with our school’s approach to protecting student privacy, Honeywood Primary School does not share identifiable images of students’ faces on our page.

🎶 **Massed Choir Festival—Here We Come!** 🎶

Our talented choir recently attended their very first rehearsal for the exciting Massed Choir Festival!

They boarded the bus bright and early, and it wasn’t long before they spontaneously burst into song—much to the delight of their bus driver! 🎵

During the rehearsal, students practised all the songs they will perform later in September at the Perth High Performance Centre. They will join an incredible 700 choir members from 12 schools for what promises to be a spectacular performance!

Next up is a full day of rehearsals at the Perth HPC, followed by an afternoon rehearsal and the highly anticipated performance the following day.

We are incredibly proud of our choir and cannot wait to see them shine on stage! 🌟🎤

📚 Book Swap Fun! 📚

Our students recently enjoyed a wonderful Book Swap! They brought along one or two books they had finished reading and exchanged them for books contributed by other students.

It was a fantastic opportunity to share favourite stories, discover new authors and take home up to two exciting books to enjoy. Our pre-loved books found new homes, and our students left with fresh reading adventures ahead!

📖 We brought a book, swapped a book and discovered our next great read!

🪢✨ Skipping Ropes and Heart Foundation Fundraising ✨🪢

Honeywood Primary School raised $783 for the Heart Foundation- what an amazing effort!! A big thank you to all those involved.

We’re excited to announce that skipping ropes are now available every day for our Year 1–6 students to enjoy! 🎉

The skipping ropes are hanging outside the Staffroom entrance wall, ready for students to grab and have some fun during break times.

Students can head to the grassed area between the Staffroom and Administration Block to practise their skipping, learn new tricks, challenge their friends and most importantly… have fun and keep active! 💪😊

We have already witnessed our students skipping, laughing and enjoying this new addition to our playground! 🪢💫

Let’s get skipping, Honeywood! 💙💚
