Something I hear a lot in first conversations with clients: "I'm working harder than I ever have โ€” but I feel like I'm going backwards. or not making any progress"

It's one of the most dispiriting feelings in business. You're putting in the hours. You care deeply. And still, the results don't match the effort.

In my experience, the issue is rarely about how hard someone is working. It's about whether the work they're doing is aimed at the right things.

Busy and productive are not the same thing, even though they feel similar from the inside.

The shift that changes everything? Getting clear on what actually moves your business forward โ€” and doing that first, before anything else. Not your emails. Not the tasks that feel safe and comfortable.

It's a small discipline, but it's not a small change.

If you've been feeling the grind lately and wondering why effort alone isn't cutting it โ€” this might be worth sitting with.

I had a conversation with a client recently that stayed with me.
She's talented, experienced, and genuinely knows her market well. She'd mapped out her offer, worked out her pricing, even drafted her first emails. Everything was ready.

"So what's stopping you?" I asked.

She paused for a moment, then said: "๐—›๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—น๐˜†?

There it was. Underneath all the preparation and planning was a single, very human fear.

This is what I see in most of the entrepreneurs I work with. The problem isn't knowledge. It's not strategy. It's not even time. It's the quiet belief that taking action will somehow reveal something unflattering about us.

Here's what I know to be true:

If you're sitting on something you know you should be doing โ€” an offer, a post, a conversation, a price increase โ€” I'd gently ask: what do you actually believe would happen if you tried?

That question is usually where the real work begins.

Ahhhh copywriting... god I love good copywriting.

This is a sub headline from a full page ad I tore out of an airline mag over a decade ago. The headline is ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜ but I didn't want to put that in the image as I thought it may get blocked (maybe it still will because I have written it here?).

Anyway this article is full of great copy listen to this...

When I teach copywriting I often use this ad as a master class. One secret copywriting tactic is to demonstrated incredibly well in the ad. The tactic is 'selling the benefit beyond the benefit'.

But the deeper need of someone who wants to be slim is likely to be desired... To get the partner of their dreams, to get the job they've always dreamt of, to have children... so those things are highlighted in the ad, even better as a quote, "๐˜ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข ๐˜ง๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฑ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ด ๐˜ฅ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง".

Every month I host a Zoom call for a group of people who are "working on themselves" - psychologically / spiritually and sometimes physically.

The process they engage in throughout the year is designed to make them conscious... Conscious of their thoughts, their impulses, their drivers, their behaviours, their excuses and their outcomes.

The process to achieve this is VERY simple. They just agree to keep a daily practice. The practice must be simple in nature, do-able no matter what, and measurable. Some examples; 10 minutes of physical exercise, journal a full page each day, meditate for 15 minutes, read 10 minutes of a non-fiction book each day etc. There are other things like diets and abstinence but they are a bit more advanced and not relevant here and now.

In December each year I ask, what worked, what have you noticed about yourself and your circumstances that have changed? The outcomes and insights are always terrific. For example; new jobs / careers / businesses, new or improved relationships, more money, less weight, fitter, stronger, less baggage, less stress, happier and so on.

How can this be? How can 10 minutes of non-fiction reading lead to me being happier with better relationships and a better income? The short answer is that you start to trust yourself, you listen to yourself and can spot self-defeating narratives and you begin to act differently (that's the core of it but there's lots of nuance which I can explain at a later stage).

The bottom line, change doesn't just happen, you have to make it happen and that means thinking and doing things differently. On Saturday when I ask these guys... "What really worked this year" I know we are in for some amazing stories.

So how about you? What Really Worked This Year? If you want to know more about the process above contact me.

This morning I read an article in the UK news that triggered something in me. It was a story about a guy who had become a very successful investor and whose journey began when he first bought shares when Thatcher privatised publicly owned assets. I could go off on all sorts of tangents here but I'll stick to my point.

I haven't thought about that scenario for twenty plus years but it brought up feelings of frustration and anger in me that have lasted most of the day. I didn't even realise this still affected me but it obviously does. It was hiding down in my subconscious waiting to be triggered. And it's indicative of part of my programming that still directs my behaviour today.

In my case my "poverty programming". I grew up in relative poverty so many of the things I learned in my formative years were taught by poor people. Despite the fact that it's no longer necessary I will compare prices in the supermarket to get the best deal on something like baked beans. I know all the reasons why this is ridiculous BUT there's something deep in my psyche that 'makes' me do it.

Thus Jung's quote... โ€œUntil You Make The Unconscious Conscious, It Will Rule Your Life And You Will Call It Fateโ€... It makes me wonder, where else does poverty consciousness play out in my life & business?

Same question to you... Do you say yes to work when you know you shouldn't? Do you undercharge for the value you provide? Take on 'charity cases'? Pull all nighters?

What's driving you?

I'm sure that you've heard that old saying, "Teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for life"? Well when it comes to business I am here to tell you this is a bad strategy. My businesses have always counted on getting results for people.

We've taught restaurant owners how to bums on seats every day of the week. As trainers and coaches, we've taught people how to increase their sales results instantly, accelerate their learning, increase their confidence, overcome their limiting beliefs and much much more.

But when it comes to clients actually achieving the outcomes they say they want e.g. grow their sales, many won't do what it takes. I'm not pointing fingers because I've been that person too... and I'm sure you have.

But if our revenue as service providers depends on our clients getting results, then we have to find a way to make it (whatever it is) work

Despite everything becoming 'easier' in the last 30 years e.g. computers, the internet, home computing, websites, online banking, access to world markets, work from home, offshore workers and now Ai... people will still tell you they're too busy to do more than they're currently doing.

So if you can find a way to give them the fish - actually, put it on a plate and cut it up for them - and even feed it to them...

Just don't try to tell them how to fish.

Below is the full transcript of the billionaire Toto Wolff CEO of Mercedes F1 explaining excellence and demonstrating leadership. I love where he says "you go in there like a ghost" this is about attention to detail, being completely of service, excellence without ego and providing a peerless experience for your client...

"I don't want to have anyone experience that he or she goes on the toilet and it's dirty. If the lobby isn't properly presented, how does the car look under the bonnet? I mean, we have hospitality at the centre of the (F1 Racing Team) paddock.

You only get to go into hospitality if you're someone really, really important for the team. You're a sponsor, you're a husband or wife of a sponsor. People expect this to be Formula 1, so you expect to have a restaurant Michelin-like meal because you're in Formula 1.

And I don't want to have anyone experience that he or she goes on the toilet and it's dirty. You know, we hired a hygiene manager and we had a whole team...

I said to them, okay, I'm going to explain to you how that goes because it's important. I showed them how I wanted the toilet to be cleaned and how I wanted them to use the brush, not having crap on the brush when you put it back.

And then how you clean the sink and put all the towels back in there. And then I said, on the Friday, free practice day, I want you to be in there every 15 minutes and clean it on the Saturday every five minutes. And on the Sunday, after every single person that goes on the toilet,

You're out there after 30 seconds and it needs to be immaculate for every single guest because I don't want the wife of a CFO going in there and thinking, what's this? It's a public toilet. So, over the time, we had a process, we had a checklist, like when you're flying an airplane. And since then, it's always been a pleasure for me to go in there."

You might think you can't do this because you sell a service or it doesn't work for your products. Well maybe this will show you how to tweak the promotion for your business. In this example it's restaurants and at first you might think it would not work for them either, but I will show you that it does and how it makes restaurateurs a lot of money.

We started doing this with the restaurants we worked with as soon as I saw that Black Friday was a thing. So this goes back about a decade and it has worked every time.

๐˜: We send out a Black Friday Offer email to diners who are on the mailing lists of the restaurants we do marketing for. Typically their databases range from around 5,000 - 100,000. When we began there were no booking apps or QR codes so our clients had to collect the diners details on paper... then we had to do data input for them. You can imagine how unpopular that was, but they did it and it paid off massively. Nowadays with QR Codes it's all much simpler.

The email offers the diner the chance to buy a gift certificate and receive 20% extra for free, so for example - buy a $100 gift certificate and get an extra gift certificate valued at $20. There's no catch or small print, spend $100 and get $120.

๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐——๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น๐˜€: Anyone who sells gift vouchers knows that they don't all get redeemed, this is called breakage and I have known it range from 5% - 65% unredeemed! So even though the restaurateur is giving away an extra 20% some of that will never be claimed. Secondly when people come in to dine with their voucher, they often spend more than normal because it feels like this isn't real money. Thirdly if people have bought the gift voucher to give to others as a present (Christmas maybe), they are doing your marketing for you, introducing a new client to your venue. So that's free marketing!

๐—”๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—™๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜†: everyone who has bought a voucher for your (in this case venue) has just excluded the competition. The voucher can only be spent at your venue and this gives your team another opportunity to wow the client.

If you want to brainstorm with me how this can work for you, message me.

So here we are again, hurtling towards the end of another year... My god where did the year go? You're probably thinking about Christmas parties, going out for drinks, buying presents, family trips and BBQs. It's an exciting time! ... And come New Years Eve you'll probably be setting goals and resolutions for next year.

Well I have an early Christmas present for you. Seven weeks to score the goals you set for this year.

OK it's short and if you hit some hurdles or got side tracked I get it. But as Earl Nightingale once said "๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฎ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ต๐˜† ๐—ด๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น"... so even if you cannot possibly achieve that goal in seven weeks you can be successful by going after it with renewed passion so that you are seven weeks closer to achieving it in 2026.

What do you think? Are you up for it?

It really doesn't matter what your job, business, niche or role is. You are in the people business! If you do your thing, in a way that people FEEL taken care of then you'll always be in demand. Ai might come and take this role, but if this is in your DNA there'll always be a place for you.

The quote comes from Will Guidara who was the co-owner of Eleven Madison Park. It was this philosophy as well as amazing food that saw his business (restaurant) elevated to No1 in the world.
