Soil2Soul Growing food, nourishing people. We believe in healthy food and skilful primary production techniques. [email protected]

Universally it is recognised that we need to practice farming methods that optimise the natural environment and efficiently produce a nutritious and secure food supply. For this to occur, we need to ensure a renewable crop of skilled primary producers remain in agriculture so that our land is farmed in a sustainable manner that avoids irreversible damage. Across Australia the family farm has prove

n to be the most effective and efficient way to sustainably produce food and manage the land. However for some time now, this model has been challenged with decreasing terms of trade and difficult climatic events.

“There is a movement to connect back to the planet and do the ‘right thing’.”
Peter Thompson

The majority of money made on farms is tied up in operations, leaving little or no funds for sustainable farming options, technology and advancement. On top of this many family farms have high debt and interest repayments which severely limit their choices in the day to day running of their farms. Farmers are under threat of becoming an endangered species with debt and uncertainty about the future resulting in skilled workers leaving the land in droves. This is catastrophic for our future, as these farmers are taking generations of agricultural knowledge with them. Young farmers are also finding it difficult to see primary production as a viable career path and are taking job opportunities elsewhere. On top of this, the land itself is also being threatened with mounting pressure to maximise production in an endeavour to attain profit rather than optimising the land for the future.

“Food is the energy that powers the people of the planet. Farmers are the producers of that vital commodity and the Earth the ground force. Innovation and collaboration are key words for sustainable success in the future.”
Nikki Thompson

The solution lies in working together with a system for farmers that increases economic stability thus protecting the land for future generations.

I have just finished reading this thought provoking book that so aligns with our vision and purpose here at Soil2Soul . As the cover states it truly is a “Radical vision of hope” and in reality something we as farmers and society in general can so easily embrace.
Thank you for getting me the book Nikki Thompson

We have currently been upgrading some 40-50 year old fences on Nugget Hills. Where possible we are reusing existing posts and wire and adding new where necessary. Generally we have saved well over 2/3 rds of the wire and 90% of the posts. The three young English lads, Ollie, Andy & Tom, who are assisting us, are having an experience of a lifetime, learning new skills and proudly leaving a legacy they will hopefully one day bring their future families to see!! Our Syntropic plot is abundant! First banana shooing, corn beginning to cob and zucchinis growing in size before our eyes. And the flavour of them is amazing. Cooke simply with olive oil and a little salt and pepper is all you need.
Nature's abundance calls us to be in connection and collaboration - far more is given than we can receive and use! Through our connections we are finding more and more ways to share the fecundity of our harvest. Bringing joy and wellbeing to our larger community.
What a blessing

Our plot is surging ahead ( and loving the 60 mm rain over three days) all tree & shrub seedlings as well as things like ginger & cassava taking off from cuttings and roots. There is a plethora of vegetables ( zucchini, radish, Asian leafy greens) as well as other plants like corn, watermelon, pumpkins and Dolichos Lab Lab, Mungbean and edible beans all super happy. The inter row buffel grass seeded with Progardes, forage sorghum, Gatton Panic , Rhodes grass, vetch, chicory, tillage radish and medics is also striking magnificently. Congratulations to the Hughes family for being the wonderful land stewards and mentors they are. We share a very similar ethos here with Soil2Soul. May the regenerative, syntropic agricultural space continue to flourish and gift its life lessons more widely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEcq8RpVgjE Emma King Peter Thompson Angus King

We have had a successful couple of days mustering over 800head of cattle out of our Nugget Hills country. They have been bought in from 2500 ha of scrub , gorge and open grass country to be drafted into smaller lots as they continue their grassfed journey. We used a combination of very capable people, horses, dogs, buggies and a helicopter to bring them to the yards. A large portion of the mob were beautifully quiet Brahman cross heifers from Kacie and Ardie Lord. Emma Angus Peter Heidi Polley

We have just finished packing the meat from one of our 2 year old grass fed steers. He dressed out at a whopping 350 kg! The first photo is his younger sisters enjoying Oats and multi species…this is followed by the Rib fillet ( aka Cube Roll)pre and post slicing then 600 gram/ slice Rump ( with my hand for scale!!) then Nikki Thompson bagging the T- bone steaks finishing with a bag of Chuck steak. Along with Angus King & Emma King we have nurtured our cattle purely on grass and forage crops without any licks or fertiliser. Our aim is to be as natural and Regenerative as possible and looking at those cattle and that meat, that have played such a huge role in managing the carbon cycle towards nett sequestration, we firmly believe we are on a good trajectory.

Peter, Emma, Angus and I are excited to be hosting a Syntropic Farming workshop at Echo Hills with Thiago Gimenez Barbosa in September. The course is for anyone from beginners to gardeners to large scale farmers and is about coupling ecosystem regeneration with food production. The flyer will give more details and please reach out to ask any questions.
