Celebrating Our Amazing SSOs for SSO Week at Wallaroo Primary School!

This week, we proudly recognise and celebrate the incredible work of our School Services Officers (SSOs) at Wallaroo Primary School. Our SSOs go above and beyond each day, providing essential support to our learners, children, staff, and families.

Whether it’s assisting in classrooms, preparing engaging learning materials, supporting individual learners, helping with administration, or creating warm and welcoming spaces, our SSOs are the backbone of our school community. Their dedication, kindness, and positivity make a real difference in the lives of our children and contribute to the inclusive and nurturing environment we value.

On behalf of all staff, learners, and families, thank you to our SSOs for your hard work, compassion, and the vital role you play every day. Wallaroo Primary School is a better place because of you!

Recently, 30 of our lucky learners got to experience the Monet to Matisse exhibit at the South Australian Art Gallery.

The Monet to Matisse exhibition tells the story of artists defying tradition and transforming modern art, from Impressionism to Cubism and Surrealism to Abstract Expressionism. Featured artists include Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Helen Frankenthaler, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh and James McNeill Whistler.

Our guides questioned our learners about what they could see in the art and why they thought they were painted, and what techniques were used to create the art. Our learners asked many questions displaying their curiosity for the art pieces. They found it interesting that despite looking at the same pieces of art, different learners saw and thought different things. Art is in the eye of the beholder.

April-Rose, Evie and Riley were even lucky to be selected by the art galleries media team to appear in promotional photographs of children visiting the exhibition.

After viewing the exhibition, learners got to learn about two South Australian artists, Arlon Hall and Billie Justice Thomson, and try out their art techniques to create their own masterpieces.

On Friday 31st July, Room 6 and some lucky learners from Room 4 travelled to Adelaide to visit the Animal Welfare League at Wingfield for their Learning Expedition. The Animal Welfare League of South Australia Inc (AWL) brings together lost and abandoned pets and caring humans to create happy homes where everyone feels loved.

Learners asked experts at the AWL questions about how the AWL runs, how we can help cats and kittens in our community, and how to care for rescued cats and kittens.

One of the surprising statistics that we found out was that every cat has a litter of 4-6 kittens. Cats can have kittens from as young as 4 months old. With so many kittens and cats desexed, that means thousands more kittens and cats every year! It’s vital that everyone gets their kittens and cats desexed.

This was a beautiful learning opportunity and helped to see first hand what a state of the art facility can do for rescue animals. Many children wished they could’ve brought home and adopted a cat. We could’ve spent the whole day there and not had enough of interacting with the cats and exploring the facilities!

Our visit to the AWL is supporting learners to create their own posters on the 3-3-3 Rule to Adopting Rescue Cats and an information booklet on everything you need to know about having a pet cat. We can’t wait to share these with you!

Thank you to everyone who has donated to Little Claws Rescue on behalf of Room 6.

We are collecting food and litter to support Little Claws Rescue as part of our Learning Expedition exploring how we can help cats and kittens in our community.

We will be collecting all term, so keep bringing in your generous donations!

Congratulations to Mrs Williamson and our clever learners for their winning entries in the Copper Coast Show on the weekend!

Our fabulous scarecrow made using recycled e waste from the Copper Coast Resource Recovery Centre won first prize and a $25 voucher to go back towards our school garden!

Our Kitchen Garden won 1st place in the Junior Produce sections for beetroot, carrots and a head of silverbeet that also won “Best In Show”.

Six learners were successful with their artwork. Callum, Jackson A, and Milah 1st place, Eli 2nd place and Emilia 3rd place. While Sophie won 3rd place in her age level in the colouring in competition.
