These lovely ladies were adopted from LET THE LADIES GO, ex battery hens now living their best lives in retirement. It is so heart warming to see them take a dirt bath and do what is natural for them. They follow us around like puppies and have such a natural desire to explore especially when they are about to be fed. They are such a source of amusement even when they are scratching where they shouldn’t be.

The cups for Christmas tree were egg cartons mulched in a food processor and pressed into a fridge egg holder. Using tongs provided the children can fill the cups with Pom poms. The children have observed the Pom poms are a different colour in the green clasp of the tongs.

Spaghetti Squash 10/12/2018

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Until recently I'd never heard of spaghetti Squash. It had me intrigued so I found a local supplier and a recipe to try it. There's a bit of a trick to preparing it but well worth the effort. When I opened the one I was preparing some of the seeds had sprouted so I gathered a handful and placed them in a shallow bath of water. Once roots had grown a little more I transferred them into a seedling medium until they were well established. The 6 seedlings were then transferred to our small veggie patch and watered. Unfortunately the snails got to 3 but we managed to save 3 and we now have flowers and 2 fruit. Fingers crossed we get some fruit large enough to share.

Pigs in Mud 06/07/2018

Kmart Hack - pigs from the pet section.
When squeezed these pigs let out a grunt and the harder and longer you squeeze the funnier it is. Added to a sensory tub with chocolate goop provides the children with a fine motor strengthening experience. Squeezing the pig to make it grunt uses small muscle groups in the fingers and hands and builds muscle strength for life skills such as doing buttons and zips, opening lunch boxes and using cutlery. Academic benefits include holding a pencil for colouring in and using scissors. The goop is a resistance medium which requires some manipulation to move and pick up. Adding a scraper and spoon invites the children to collect the goop and baste the pigs in mud or just using their hands.
