Spectrum Autism Therapy and Consultation

Play therapy should look like this: laughter that comes easily, smiles that feel shared, moments of genuine connection, a child who feels safe enough to explore and experiment, and a therapist right there with them.

The importance of play therapy:
Early intervention is crucial for children with autism and developmental delays, as it capitalises on the brain's heightened plasticity during the early years, promoting significant gains in cognitive, social, and communication skills. Play therapy is particularly effective because it engages children in a natural, motivating way that fosters learning and development. Through structured and unstructured play, children can practice social interaction, emotional regulation, and problem-solving skills in a supportive environment.

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is an evidence-based intervention designed for young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It integrates behavioral and developmental principles to support the development of social communication, language, cognitive, and motor skills. One of the core aspects of ESDM is learning through play, which is fundamental to its approach.

Throughout the month of October I’ll be running 70km for the 1 in 70 Australians with autism spectrum disorder. This run will help build awareness around the challenges associated with ASD, as well as raise funds for Autism Spectrum Australia to support families with diagnosis and specialised support.
