YEAR 6 KITCHEN GARDEN PROGRAM

What a wonderful week in the Kitchen Garden Program!

Our Year 6 students enjoyed turning freshly harvested garden produce into delicious creations in the kitchen. They made pickled pigface and warrigal greens fritters, learning new skills while exploring the unique flavours of native ingredients.

Out in the garden, students took part in lessons on propagating native oregano, discovering how new plants can be grown from existing ones. They also enjoyed making and tasting a refreshing native lemongrass and native mint tea, straight from ingredients grown in our garden and tendering to the worm farm.

It's always rewarding to see students connecting with nature, developing practical skills, and gaining an appreciation for growing and preparing fresh, healthy food. Well done to everyone involved!

WORLD'S GREATEST SHAVE
IS COMING TO HILLS
Monday June 22nd

Secondary students and staff are participating in the World's Greatest Shave later this term. Students can choose to have a buzz cut or shorten their hair, with the aim to have all hair donated.

Blood cancer is a cause that has impacted a number members of our School community and is a cause close to our heart as a school. At the moment, there are about 140,000 people around the country living with blood cancer.

We have the power to make a real difference in the lives of Australians, with every dollar raised funding life-changing cancer care.

If you would like to make a donation or sponsor a student or staff member please follow this link: https://www.worldsgreatestshave.com/fundraisers/2026hillschristiancommunityschool

Your support of this wonderful event and cause is greatly appreciated.

YEAR 10 COMMUNITY SERVICE

Yesterday, the Year 10 cohort departed Hills Christian Community School to engage in a community service project to assist the congregation at Balhannah Uniting Church with Packing Day. This is an initiative to supply remote rural and Indigenous communities with clothing.

Students spent the day sorting and packing donated clothing into boxes intended to be sent across Australia, including Alice Springs and the APY Lands. All Year 10 students participated in the excursion, exercising politeness, respect and diligence with the tasks assigned. Students reported they were happy to support their local community and make connections with the congregation.

We thank the congregation at Balhannah Uniting Church for their ongoing support of this partnership and thank them for their warmth, support and hospitality with our students.

YEAR 5
RECONCILIATION WEEK

On Friday the 29th, our Year 5H class recognised and celebrated Reconciliation Week. After some discussion and learning around this year's theme "All In", the class participated in some artwork creation inspired by indigenous bark paintings and Bronwyn Bancroft's art. The task was to experiment in using natural materials as a canvas; however, some went above and beyond, creating a piece that represented themselves or a connection with place.

COOPER HOUGH SHARES HIS STORY
AT SECONDARY CHAPEL

Today's Secondary Chapel was about "Persistence & Hope". Our Secondary Outdoor Education & Physical Education Educator, Cooper Hough, shared his story of hiking 492km on the Heysen Trail. He hopes that his lived experience of training, sacrifice, mental strength and determination will serve as a positive example to the students. He spoke of the challenges, set backs, multiple attempts and then the ultimate success.

Cooper spoke about the overwhelming support of his family and friends and how they made a difference and encouraged him to keep on going when things got tough. He encouraged our students to surround themselves with people who support you, who want you to succeed and who are willing to lift you up when you're struggling. He also encouraged everyone to be one of those encouraging, supportive friends themselves.

At the end of his message he asked this question, " So what does this mean for you?

His response was, " It means when school gets tough, don't quit straight away. When sport gets hard, don't walk away too quickly. When life doesn't go your way, don't assume it's over. Sometimes you need to fail first. Sometimes you need to step away. And sometimes, you need to come back stronger.

Success isn't about getting it right the first time. It's not about giving up when things don't go your way.

So if you take one thing from this message today, let it be this; you are capable of more than you think, but it won't come easy, and it won't happen overnight. It takes time, effort and sometimes multiple attempts. But if you stick with it, lean on the people around you, and keep showing up - even when it's hard, you'll get there."

Well done Mr Hough, what an incredible achievement and what a great role model.
