Scale can quickly turn into a big problem if left unchecked.

What are scale;
Scale are small insects that vary dramatically in appearance. There are 3 main groups of scale, Hard/armoured scale, soft scale and wax scale. They are sap sucking insects that pierce into the plant stems and leaves and weaken the plant by stealing vital nutrients and causing stunted growth, leaf drop and in severe cases, death of the plant. Once they have pierced into the plant they build waxy or hard coverings over themselves as protection.
They secrete a sticky waste called honey dew that fosters black sooty mold and ants.

Treatment
-Avoid using toxic pesticides to encourage beneficial insects that eat scale, such as ladybirds, lacewings and mealy bug predators.
-Prune heavily infested leaves and stems
-Use a pest oil like white oil or neem oil to spray the affected plants. You will need to reapply 7-10 days after 1st treatment and possibly do a third follow up spray.
-Manually wipe the leaves and stem with a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol at a minimum of 70% isopropyl.

Why tip prune?

Tip pruning regularly is a great way to stimulate lower nodes to branch out. This is primarily done on the top, upward growth of the plant giving you a more dense and bushier plant rather than them getting tall and leggy.
It can also increase flower growth as the more branches the more likelihood of flowers.

To tip prune new growth you can simply pinch the new growth between your thumb and finger and pluck the new growth out.
For thicker woody shrubs use sharp clean secateurs.
