Today is the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The idea at its heart is hopeful: disasters are natural, but much of the harm they cause is not inevitable.

Choices made long beforehand shape how bad things get. Where we build, how we build, which warning systems we fund, and how well communities understand their local risks.

Australia has lived through enough fire and flood to know this in its bones. As we head into the warmer months, it is a good prompt to ask what risks sit around your own home and community, and what small steps could soften them.

It's World Animal Day, so here is a preparedness nudge for the animal lovers.

When people build an emergency plan, pets and livestock are often the last thing considered, and that can cost precious time when a fire or flood arrives.

A few simple steps make all the difference:
Keep carriers and leads somewhere easy to grab.
Note down which friends, relatives or boarding options could take your animals at short notice.
Pack a few days of food, water and any medications for them in your emergency kit too.

Recovery is the longest phase of any emergency, and often the least visible.

Long after the response is over, communities are still working through insurance, rebuilding, and finding their feet again. It's practical work, and it's personal. The best recovery efforts take their lead from the community rather than arriving with a fixed plan, and they move at the pace of the people involved.

Today is International Access to Information Day, which promotes transparency, accountability and open government. This global event celebrates and recognises the importance of the community’s right to know and access information from governments around the world. It is a cornerstone of accountable institutions.

In Australia, freedom of information laws let people request many government records, with the default position leaning toward openness. For anyone working in or with the public sector, good record-keeping is part of honouring that right.

Decisions that are documented clearly can be explained, reviewed and trusted later. Handled well, transparency strengthens good administration rather than getting in its way.

Last week we had the pleasure of delivering our WHS Essentials to Subsidence Advisory NSW for Public Sector program once again.

The ongoing demand reflects the increasing expectations placed on frontline managers and senior leaders to understand their legal and ethical responsibilities and translate WHS requirements into effective workplace practice.

Through practical activities, discussion and case studies, the program explores key areas including WHS legislative obligations, consultation, proactive risk assessment, incident investigation and the management of physical and psychosocial risks.

Importantly, the program also considers how leaders can positively influence others, strengthen safety culture and support a proactive approach to managing workplace risk.

Thank you to yesterday’s participants for their engagement, thoughtful contributions and willingness to share their experiences.
