We used Whimsy Was a Little Fish from Australia - Songs That'll Amaze Ya to make Garageband compositions! Watch the whole video to hear their ideas and read the process below.

We learnt to sing the song and then used it to make tika-tika (semi-quavers) conscious, we played it on marimbas and percussion and then the students used GarageBand to make their own arrangements of the song. They had to have the chord pattern, the tika-tika, ti-ti, ta, za ostinato pattern played by the beat sequencer and some of the melody played on the keyboard and the rest was up to them.

Level 1 is the perfect way to engage young students in classical music – with short pieces, lots of action & movement, some dancing and lots of animals (and an easy introduction to instrument families).

Level 2 takes the students on a journey through time, as they are introduced to simple concepts of structure, with movement, simple percussion scores, program music, instrument identification and fun quizzes.

Level 3 takes a detailed and specific look at the comparative musical features of Baroque and Classical, through the music of Handel, Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Aspects such as monophony and polyphony, theme and variation, rondo form, concerto and symphony are the chief areas of exploration. Differences in architecture and fashion, and differences in instrumentation, are also explored as background to the different musical forms.

Level 4 takes you on a Magical History Tour through the marvellous moods and musical stories of the Romantic period with Brahms, Chopin, Grieg, Mendelssohn, Offenbach, Schumann, Smetana, Strauss, Tchaikovsky and Wagner. Continue the journey through the dramatic changes of 20th Century music, brought in by Debussy, Holst and Gershwin.
