Let them play !

By delaying formal reading instruction, Finnish schools emphasize play, discovery, and curiosity, leading to top performance in math, reading, and science by age 15. Early pressure isn’t necessary; fostering imagination and problem-solving through play supports natural learning and reduces stress.

Today, the children eagerly explored the concept of sinking and floating using a large outdoor water bucket as part of our Science Week activities, which support our focus on inquiry-based learning and understanding simple scientific rules. The children experimented with a range of everyday objects, including an orange, a piece of Duplo, a silver bowl, a silver teaspoon, a light ball, a toy car, plastic tongs, and a piece of pool noodle.
With excitement and curiosity, they made predictions before placing each item into the water, observing whether it floated on the surface or sank to the bottom. They were fascinated to discover that some heavy-looking items, like the silver bowl, initially floated when placed ontop of the water however when filled it sunk to the bottem. .
This engaging activity not only deepened their understanding of physical properties but also sparked further curiosity about how the world works, aligning perfectly with the goals of Science Week.
