Segmenting!
Is the ability to break up spoken words into separate sounds e.g., as we spell the word ‘fish’, we segment it into its three sounds, also known as phonemes.

The ability to segment words into sounds and the ability to blend sounds into words (oral blending and segmenting) are vital prerequisite skills for spelling and reading. With this skill early readers have the confidence to break up bigger, unknown words to have a go at decoding them.

Incorporating manipulatives.
Manipulatives are physical objects, such as wooden or magnetic letters, that support letter/word/reading recognition to those with dyslexia far more effectively than key concepts written on a textbook page. By finding the letters and making the word using concrete materials the student has an opportunity to feel the letters and manipulate them into make words.

Nailing those tricky sight words!

Sight words are words that should be memorised to help a child learn to read and write.

Learning sight words allows a child to recognize these words at a glance — on sight — without needing to break the words down.

Knowing common, or high frequency, words by sight makes reading easier and faster, because the reader does not need to stop to try and sound out each individual word, letter by letter!
