Neuroaffirming practice is more than just a buzz word.
It translates the values of the neurodiversity movement into action; across our language, relationships, services, environments and systems.
It recognises neurodivergence as part of human diversity and affirms each person’s identity, autonomy, communication and support needs.
This does not mean denying disability or overlooking genuine challenges. It means recognising that someone can require significant support without needing to be fixed, normalised or made less visibly different.
Neuroaffirming practice shifts the responsibility for inclusion. Instead of continually expecting people to adapt, cope or mask, we also ask:
🌱 What barriers are present?
🌱 Whose needs was this environment designed around?
🌱 How can access, choice and participation be improved?
🌱 Are lived experiences shaping our decisions?
At The Inclusive Movement, we see this work as part of the wider disability-rights and social-inclusion movement.
While neuroaffirming practice relates specifically to neurological difference, its values - dignity, access, equity, representation, choice and belonging - matter across all disabilities.
Inclusion is not simply being present. It is being able to participate authentically, influence decisions, contribute and belong.
