A SUCCESSFUL WasteSorted Education Grant is helping two Dunsborough locals turn their passion for sustainable living into a series of free community workshops.

Reverend Justine Richmond, from St George’s Anglican Church Dunsborough, developed the project with sustainability educator Jo Kennedy of A Single Leaf South West.

Their application to the Waste Authority of WA was initially unsuccessful before funding later became available, allowing the program to go ahead.

The workshops build on existing local efforts to reduce waste, including St George’s Share & Care Program and Dunsborough Community Recycle Station, which accepts a range of difficult-to-recycle items free of charge.

The first two Mix, Make & Reuse – Cleaning with Less workshops have already attracted strong interest.

Participants were encouraged to make one achievable sustainability pledge, with follow-up showing the overwhelming majority had stuck with their commitment.

“That’s what we want these workshops to do — not just give people information, but inspire and help people to actually make a change,” Ms Kennedy said.

The next session, From Fridge to Fork – Waste Less Food, will explore practical ways households can reduce food waste through better storage, growing food, supporting local producers and sharing surplus produce.

WA households throw away an average of more than four kilograms of food each week.

Ms Kennedy said the Low Waste Living program aimed to make environmental action feel realistic rather than overwhelming.

“We can all make a difference, one step at a time,” she said.

“All our workshops are focused on simple changes people can make today, here where we live.”

The workshops are free, with bookings available through the A Single Leaf South West website and page.

Is it a rat? Or is it a mardo? Is it a bush rat or is it a bad rat?

Zoologist Jess Johnston will teach us how to tell the difference once and for all! And then we'll share our favourite and most successful live traps, how to discourage rats in your coop and how to encourage predators into your garden to do your rat hunting for you! 🌱

Another wonderful, free, community event - this time from our friends over at the Cape Naturaliste Conservation Enterprise

Learn how to tell the difference between rats (ferals!) and a number of cute, friendly and local native marsupials.
