Until the Sky Falls Quiet: Film Showing and Discussion - July 5th, 2pm-4:30pm
Join our NTI student-led event that will include a film screening of Until the Sky Falls Quiet with an engaged, supportive discussion about how we respond to a world in crisis, both personally and collectively.
View and reflect on this incredible documentary, which follows two Australian doctors who traveled to Gaza in April 2024 to volunteer on the frontlines of a collapsing health system.
This event has been organised and offered by NTI students as an opportunity to reflect on how we respond to broader crises unfolding around us, and how we can build insight, compassion and connection with others.
The event will begin with a short reflective practice. Following the documentary, there will be a panel discussion with members of the production team and the Nan Tien community, and the opportunity for group discussion.
Filmed in real time with much of the footage captured by the doctors themselves, Until the Sky Falls Quiet is a rare and intimate record of resilience, loss, and the human cost of bearing witness in the world’s largest ‘open air prison’.
Among the few internationals granted access into Gaza, Dr. Sanjay Adusumilli and Dr. Siraj Sira enter a world defined by bombardment, displacement, and profound scarcity. Through their eyes, Until the Sky Falls Quiet bears witness to the resilience and humanity of Palestinians living and working under siege. The film captures not only the loss endured, but also the courage and compassion that persist amidst devastation.
Until the Sky Falls Quiet invites audiences to witness what remains when everything else falls away. You can watch the official trailer for this film on the Until the Sky Falls Quiet YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9wzfV6EY8I

Buddhism in a Changing World: Panel Discussion - Presented by Dr Stefania Travagnin, Associate Professor Jack Chia and Associate Professor Venerable Juewei
June 23 2026, 11am - 12:30pm (AEST) - Event will be held online via Zoom and on campus
In this panel, A/Prof Jack Chia (https://jackchia.com/) from the National University of Singapore and Dr Stefania Travagnin (https://stefaniatravagnin.net/) from SOAS University of London will join Venerable A/Prof Juewei (https://www.nantien.edu.au/about-us/faculty-and-staff/venerable-dr-juewei/) to explore Buddhist responses to contemporary challenges in a changing world.
Jack Chia will introduce the concept of “Buddhist Diplomacy,” demonstrating how Buddhist ideas, institutions, objects, and transnational networks have been mobilised to shape cultural exchange, support peacebuilding initiatives, and at times serve geopolitical agendas across modern Asia. At a time of rising geopolitical tensions and renewed interest in cultural diplomacy, this highlights the often-overlooked role of religion in global affairs.
Stefania Travagnin will examine the evolving relationship between Buddhism and AI. Moving beyond using AI as end-users, she will explore how Buddhists and Buddhist perspectives might shape the development of AI, potentially influencing the global development and governance of artificial intelligence.
Tickets are free, but registration is essential. Please reserve your ticket here: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/1988966220507?aff=oddtdtcreator

Trying to understand Buddhism can be overwhelming in lieu of its long history, multiple languages and a myriad of different schools, lineages and traditions.
NTI’s Introduction to Buddhism breaks this complexity down into three accessible baskets: history, core ideas and lived experience/practices.
Available online and in person, this subject can be taken as part of an award program or as a non-award unit, either with or without assessment.
Acquiring this kind of foundational knowledge is not only useful for people who already have a Buddhist orientation, it is also helpful for those trying to discern where the boundaries might be in relation to Buddhist mind-training and meditative techniques, the secular world, and other contemplative or religious traditions.
Many ideas and techniques have already migrated out of their traditional Buddhist context and into more secular domains such as psychology and education. With this migration, there has been a need to learn the real context for where these ideas and techniques have arisen from. Introduction to Buddhism is one of the very few places where such a context is provided that is simultaneously well grounded in excellent scholarship and is accessible to all.
Taught by Dr Toby Mendelson, a “lover of wisdom” who has trained as a philosopher, and is most comfortable in the areas of cross pollination between East and West.

Dr Nadine Levy (Head of Program for Health and Social Wellbeing and Applied Mindfulness) has recently published her latest Guardian article, which discusses and reflects on beliefs - how they can change over time, how we can change with them, and what can happen if we don’t change.
“Even the most skilful views can, when clung to, become limiting.”
I’ve learned not to cling to my beliefs – even the ones that shaped me | Nadine Levy
When held with curiosity, beliefs can be productive, creative and alive. But they can also imprison us, closing down life itself
