The Learning Network is led by Kell Bell- passionate educator with 20+ years experience as a PDHPE & Community & Family Studies (CAFS) teacher. She has presented workshops across NSW in PDHPE, CAFS & HMS and in Australia on teaching pedagogy, specialising in formative assessment and curriculum design. Kell has dedicated her career to support the development of teachers and their students through professional learning, webinars, resource development, marking and mentoring. After leaving the classroom in July 2020, she is now the CEO of The Learning Network and pdhpe.net. Kell has supported close to 4000 busy PDHPE, CAFS and HMS teachers across NSW in her memberships, workshops, consultancy and resources and over 8000 PDHPE & CAFS students in her Year 11 & 12 Revision Sessions. HMS teachers, are we overcomplicating the Sustainable Development Goals? 👀

The SDGs are a new concept in Stage 6 Health and Movement Science, and I’m seeing teachers and students making them more complicated than they need to be.

Here’s the thing...

In Year 11, students need a general understanding of the SDGs.

But in Year 12? It’s about application and evaluation.

And this is where we can really help our students stand out in the HSC.

Rather than everyone relying on the same Healthy Cities Illawarra example from the syllabus, encourage your students to explore initiatives in communities they’re familiar with.

Bega? Look at what’s happening locally.

Blacktown? Explore initiatives within that community.

The key is helping students understand how the SDGs are being applied, where the gaps are and what that means for health outcomes.

It’s about moving beyond knowing the content to actually applying and evaluating it.

Some of the best PE lessons I've seen happened on a strip of asphalt with a bucket of beanbags.

Because FMS aren't taught by equipment.
They're taught by you.

Use the lines already painted on the playground.
Run small groups so every kid gets more turns.
Pick one skill and teach it well.

I do. We do. You do.

It doesn't have to be perfect.
It just has to happen.

CAFS, HMS & PDHPE teachers, I want 2027 to feel different for you.

I know what it’s like to love teaching and still feel completely exhausted by it.

For 16 years, I gave so much of myself to a job I genuinely loved. But eventually, the way I was doing it wasn’t sustainable.

Extreme burnout ultimately pushed me to leave the classroom.

And I don’t want you to have to get to where I got to.

I don’t want another year to become a cycle of giving everything you have each term, crawling towards the school holidays, recovering… and then starting all over again.

I want teaching to be sustainable for you.

And that means putting the intentions, boundaries and practices in place before you reach the point where there’s nothing left in the tank.

That’s why we’re coming together in March 2027 for the Reset Retreat.

Early enough in the year to stop, take stock and think intentionally about how you want the rest of your teaching year to look and feel.

To recalibrate. Reconnect. Reset.

This isn’t about escaping teaching for a couple of days. It’s about giving yourself the space to work on the human behind your teaching, and creating practices you can take back into the rest of your year.

I wish I had done more of this when I was still in the classroom.

NSW teachers have worked hard enough.

How many school holidays do you go into absolutely crawling?

You spend the first few days trying to recover, eventually start to feel like yourself again… and then before you know it, you’re back at school and the cycle starts all over again.

We want to change that.

Because sustainable teaching can’t just be about making it to the next holidays.

It’s about putting intentions, boundaries and practices in place throughout the year that protect your time, energy and wellbeing, so you don’t need to completely run yourself into the ground every term before giving yourself permission to stop.

That’s a huge part of what our 2027 Reset Retreat is about.

Two and a half days to step away from the noise and spend some time working on the human behind your teaching.

To recalibrate where you’re at. Reconnect with yourself and other teachers who get it. And reset the way you want to move through the teaching year.

Because the goal isn’t just to feel better for one weekend.

It’s to create practices that help teaching feel more sustainable long after you leave.

Teachers are VERY good at looking after everyone else.

Your students need you. Your colleagues need you. Your family needs you. There’s always another email to answer, something to mark, a lesson to plan or someone needing five minutes of your time.

And somewhere in amongst all of that… you come last.

By March, those good intentions you started the year with can already feel a very long way away.

That’s why we created the 2027 Reset Retreat.

Two nights away at a private estate in the Hunter Valley, with a small group of teachers who completely get it.

A chance to recalibrate where you’re at.

To reconnect with your body, your purpose and other teachers.

And to reset the boundaries around your time and energy so you leave with a plan for a teaching year you can actually sustain.

There’ll be guided movement, nourishing food, workshops, bushwalks, an ice bath, sauna, hot tub, mineral pool, firepits under the stars… and actual SPACE to breathe.

And yes, you’ll also complete 6 hours of NESA PL while you’re there.

CAFS teachers, are your students still lumping policy and legislation together?

They sit alongside each other in Groups in Context, but they are NOT the same thing, and students need to show the marker that they understand the difference.

A policy provides guiding principles and direction.

Legislation is law, and it’s enforceable.

Both can play an important role in supporting groups within our community, but if students are using the terms interchangeably in an HSC response, they’re missing an important distinction.

It’s one of those little misconceptions that’s worth clearing up now before they walk into the HSC.

Save this one for your CAFS revision and send it to another CAFS teacher who might need it. 💛

Okay… we’ll admit it. Our CAFS teachers are a little bit obsessed with this conference.

But what is it that keeps bringing them back?

It’s getting out of the classroom for two days and being completely immersed in CAFS.

It’s hearing from people who work in the areas you teach about and getting real-world stories, examples and perspectives you can actually bring back to your students.

It’s the conversations around the tables, the questions that come up during sessions and being surrounded by other teachers who understand the subject like you do.

And this year, we’ve put together another program that we cannot WAIT for you to experience.

There’s a reason our CAFS teachers keep coming back. 💛

This year marks our 6th annual CAFS Conference, and around 80% of the teachers who attend come back year after year.

And honestly, that’s one of our favourite things about it.

Because it means each year we’re not just putting on another conference. We’re bringing together a community of CAFS teachers who genuinely want to learn from each other, share ideas, have the conversations they don’t always get to have at school and leave feeling excited about their subject again.

Primary teachers, your students need more skills, not more sport.

Because here's the truth.
Primary students have lost basic movement skills.

Kids are arriving at school who can't hop, skip or land a jump safely.
Then we hand them a ball, pick teams and wonder why half the class switches off.

Sport is where skills are applied.
PE is where skills are taught.

And that teaching starts with Fundamental Movement Skills.

Running. Jumping. Balancing. Throwing. Catching.
The building blocks for every game, every sport and every playground moment.

When kids are taught how to move, they move with confidence.
When they move with confidence, they join in.

Child Studies & PASS teachers… yep, your programs need some attention too.

After the HUGE few years PDHPE teachers have already had, the last thing you need is another course to rethink, reprogram and rebuild from scratch.

But if you’re teaching Child Studies or PASS next year, there are changes you need to be ready for.

And please… don’t hand the whole thing over to ChatGPT or Claude and hope for the best.

High-quality programs, resources and assessments need to be carefully developed around the syllabus, the course and what you actually need to teach.

That’s why what you’re seeing in this carousel has been 18 months in the making.

We’ve done the unpacking. We’ve developed the resources. We’ve thought about how this actually comes to life in the classroom.
