Meet Your Instructor Andrew

Andrew's journey into the world of music, rhythm, and dance began in 1998 when he received an invitation from friends to join a ballroom dancing class at university. The class was taught by a couple who had been part of the cast of the famous movie "Strictly Ballroom." Little did he know that this would mark the beginning of a life-changing adventure. A year later, An

drew's friends introduced him to a salsa class, and it was in that moment that everything changed. The sound of the clave and the mesmerising rhythm of the beats took him to a place of pure joy, and he became absolutely hooked on salsa dancing. The Cuban flair, the ability to lose oneself in the music, and the beautiful musicality captured his heart completely. Over the years, Andrew has delved deep into the world of salsa, exploring various forms such as ON1 or LA salsa, ON2 or New York Salsa/ Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, and Son. Besides salsa, he has also developed a passion for Tango and West Coast Swing, expanding his repertoire and becoming a versatile dancer. With a remarkable 25-year journey in the salsa community, Andrew's expertise has earned him opportunities to teach at well-known establishments like Body Beat Dance Studio, Buena Vista Dance Academy, Latin Spirit Australia, and various salsa venues in Sydney. His dedication and skill have made him an integral part of the salsa scene in the city. As part of his journey as a professional dancer, Andrew had the privilege of being a member of a professional dance team, performing at numerous venues, including La Bodeguita de Medio, which later transformed into The Cuban Place. Today, Andrew is the owner and head instructor at Cuban Passion, a Cuban dance school located in Ulladulla, NSW. At Cuban Passion, he shares his passion and knowledge, teaching authentic Cuban salsa, LA Salsa, Son, Cha Cha Cha, Bachata, Merengue, and more. Join Andrew on the dance floor and experience the magic of salsa and other vibrant dances as he guides you through the rich rhythms and moves that have changed his life forever!

Dancing may offer more than exercise and enjoyment.

A review of 218 trials found that dance produced a strong reduction in depression symptoms, although only 15 studies examined dance. New Oxford research also found that eight weeks of salsa classes helped young adults report less depression and social anxiety.

Music, movement, social contact, and physical activity may work together to lift mood. Yet researchers do not suggest that anyone should stop medication or therapy without medical advice.

Dance may work best as part of a treatment plan, based on each person’s health and needs.

Could doctors begin prescribing dance classes beside standard care?

An interesting point to consider is that Son originated in Cuba but was embraced and developed in Puerto Rico as early as the 1930s—nearly a century ago and long before salsa emerged in New York City. In fact, the most celebrated sonero of all time, known as El Sonero Mayor, wasn’t Cuban but Puerto Rican: Ismael Rivera.

Born in 1931, Ismael Rivera was still a teenager when he became the lead vocalist for Rafael Cortijo’s groundbreaking combo. Together, they blended Puerto Rican musical traditions such as bomba and plena with the popular sounds coming from neighboring Cuba.

Rivera’s influence helped shape the musical foundation that would later evolve into what became known as salsa in New York City. So while Son’s roots are undeniably Cuban, Puerto Rico played a major role in its development and in the creation of the salsa sound from the very beginning.

Really great tips from one of Australia’s dance Greats!!

💭 What truly makes a GREAT social dancer?

Is it the hardest moves?
The most spins?
The biggest performance energy?

In my opinion… not at all.

The dancers people remember most are usually the ones who make others feel comfortable, respected, connected, and happy on the dance floor ❤️

I put together this “10 Point Guide to Becoming a Great Social Dancer” because I believe social dancing is the most important parts of our Latin dance community.

This is not just for beginners.
It’s for ALL dancers.

Inside the image I talk about:

✔ Respect
✔ Connection
✔ Musicality
✔ Hygiene & presentation
✔ Adapting to different levels
✔ Supporting the community
✔ Positive energy
✔ And much more…

Sometimes the smallest things create the biggest impact.

If you love Salsa, Bachata, Mambo, Cuban Salsa, or simply love social dancing and our community, I encourage you to take a moment to read through it 👍

And if you feel it may help someone else on their journey, please share it ❤️

Let’s continue building dance floors full of warmth, respect, connection, and good vibes.

DON'T FORGET TO SMILE 😀
