Most coaches in this study had never heard of RED-S.
Researchers surveyed 101 Russian athletics and short-track speed skating coaches. Of the 99 who answered the awareness question, only 39.4% had previously heard of RED-S.
Even awareness did not guarantee understanding. Among those familiar with the term, fewer than half rated their confidence as moderate to very high, while the average coach recognised fewer than half of the 12 potential consequences assessed.
Coaches are not responsible for diagnosing RED-S. However, knowing the warning signs and when to refer an athlete may support earlier intervention.
