Experienced Mathematics tutor

Ilja Noordermeer is a qualified and experienced mathematics teacher (with a current Working with Children’s Check) offering individualised tutoring programs for mathematic students in year 6 to 12.

Every tutoring session is about creating a positive learning experience, supporting the student’s current goals and building skills for long term success in mathematics. The aim with every student Ilja accepts as a student, is to become confident in mathematics and get to a stage where a tutor is unnecessary. Every tutoring session is personalised for the individual student’s needs and is designed to work towards the goals determined by tutor, student and parent(s) in the first few sessions.

Tutoring sessions are available weekly during the school term. Some students only require extra assistance in a specific area of maths and may only require a few sessions to achieve their goals. Others need more longer term support to achieve their goals. Tutoring sessions are charged at an hourly rate of $60/hour for juniors and $80/hour for seniors or University students. Junior students (year 6-8) are 30mins in length ($30 per session), (year 9-10) are negotiated between 30 - 50mins in length ($30-$50 per session) and seniors (yr 11-12) or University students are 1 hour ($80 per session).

Tutoring can take place either in your home, Tumut library or via online Skype sessions (University students only). How does Ilja put together an individualised learning program? A phone interview with the parent and/or student is undertaken prior to the first tutoring session and if available, a review of recently completed topic tests and yearly examinations. From this assessment, a draft program is put together and after the first few sessions, a program for the term is written up. A typical 30min lesson: 5-10mins Warm up game or puzzle aimed at improving general skills in mathematics, for example, mental maths or deductive reasoning. A short quiz of previous work covered to assess understanding and determine retention levels. 20mins Engaging activities to reach students individual goals. Explanations as required using concrete materials, visual aids and technology, followed by completing a variety of questions. Students often receive a small amount of homework from the tutor to reinforce concepts completed in tutoring. Ilja has improved exam performance through bettering students conceptual understanding, teaching revision and study techniques and helping students overcome exam anxiety.
