🌟 Homelessness Week - Food Drive 🌟

Little Possums are taking part in the Tumut Regional Family Services’s Food Drive to support Homelessness Week 2026, and are a drop off point for the public.

With homelessness affecting people within our community, we would love to use the power of our wonderful Possums Families to spread awareness and support the food drive!

The following items are encouraged to be donated:
- Canned foods
- 2 minute noodles
- Long life milk
- Non-perishable snacks/spreads
- Cereals
- Spaghetti/baked beans
- Dry pasta

Our drop off point is open to the public so please encourage your friends and families to pop in and donate today!

Book Adventure at Little Possums

At Little Possums, Book Week is always celebrated in style. Throughout Book Week, children and educators dress up daily, hosting mini parades in their classrooms. The highlight comes on Tuesday afternoon, when the entire Centre gathers at the park for a shared celebration.

Families are warmly welcomed to join their children and educators for a vibrant parade, giving children, and sometimes parents, the opportunity to showcase their creative, often homemade, costumes.

After the parade, families participate in a variety of engaging activities, all thoughtfully designed by Little Possums' creative powerhouse, Jess Potter. Each activity is inspired by the book the children enjoy most in their classrooms.

For the transition-to-school group, "the Colour Monster" is a favourite, and the children craft their own rainbow friendship bracelets. Preschoolers, who adore "The Gruffalo", decorate Gruffalo biscuits using Arrowroot biscuits, chocolate icing, Smarties, and lollies. Toddlers, enchanted by "Room On The Broom", take part in a witch race using pool noodles as brooms, while the babies, who love "Dear Zoo", delight in posing for photos in a cut-out animal booth.

A major highlight of the afternoon is the visit from balloon artist Don Fisher, who brings joy to the children by making nearly 100 balloon animals in under an hour.

By the end of the festivities, every child carried home not just a colourful balloon animal or a handmade Gruffalo biscuit, but also memories of laughter, friendship, and the pure delight of imagination brought to life. Book week at Little Possums had once again woven together the threads of creativity, community, and a genuine love of reading, leaving everyone already looking forward to next year's adventure.

Little Possums celebrates World Ocean Day

During the month of June, the children at Little Possums embarked on an exciting journey to explore the depths of the oceans and the fascinating creatures that inhabit them, all in celebration of World Ocean Day. Each room contributed uniquely to this month-long exploration, blending creativity, education, and play to foster an engaging learning environment.

In the Discoverers Room, the youngest children focused on developing foundational numeracy skills through playful exercises. The educators introduced basic counting and numeracy concepts, helping the babies associate numbers with quantities in a tangible and interactive way. Literature played a key role, with the beloved book "The Snail and the Whale" captivating young minds. Sensory trays filled with water, paint and toy marine animals enriched their experience, alongside songs about the ocean that nurtured auditory learning and playful engagement.

The toddlers amazed everyone with their rapid developmental strides. Achieving milestones that marked new cognitive and physical progress, they engaged in free-flowing exploration activities. These included number recognition and colour-matching games, complemented by vibrant arts and crafts sessions. Interactive storytelling encouraged language skills and creativity, while child-led activities fostered independence. Puzzles and problem-solving challenges enhanced their fine motor skills, and firefighting-themed games helped them build social connections and teamwork abilities.

The Preschool Room embarked on a fascinating dual exploration. Initially focused on dinosaurs, the children learned the names of various species through hands-on activities. They then shifted their attention to the wonders of the ocean and the intricate beauty of bugs as part of World Ocean Day and World Insect Week celebrations. Creative activities tied these themes together, allowing the preschoolers to deepen their understanding of the natural world while exercising their imaginations.

The School Readiness Program adopted an "under the sea" theme, immersing children in imaginative exploration. Activities included energy-channeling games and creative exercises that enhanced numeracy, gross motor, and cutting skills. Foundational academic abilities were nurtured through interactive learning, while discussions about tiny creatures highlighted their essential roles in our ecosystem.

Reconciliation Week at Little Possums

During last week's Reconciliation Week, the children at Little Possums participated in a variety of commemorative events and activities designed to celebrate and honour our local Indigenous culture. The week offered them a meaningful platform to connect deeply with the traditions, stories, and artistry that highlight Aboriginal heritage and its profound connection to Country.

The transition-to-school children were invited to join Franklin Public School's Reconciliation Week commemorations. One of the key highlights was the performance of Dinawan's Connection, which captivated the children with its storytelling through traditional Aboriginal dance, movement, and music.

As part of the ceremony, the children took part in a traditional smoking ceremony. Walking through the smoke was a symbolic act of cultural cleansing and welcome, providing them with an authentic experience of Indigenous traditions. Their joy multiplied as they were invited to participate in the dance, turning the event into an engaging and memorable way to show respect for Aboriginal culture and learn about its enduring connection to the land.

To further honour Reconciliation Week, both the transition and preschool rooms, delved into the work of Bree Buttenshaw, the artist behind this year's National Reconciliation Week campaign artwork. Buttenshaw's art beautifully celebrates the resilience of Australia's native flora, including Lemon Myrtle, Banksia, Gum Leaves, Desert Lime and Kangaroo Paw. These plants symbolise regeneration, endurance through adversity, and the ability to flourish despite harsh conditions or challenges.

Inspired by Bree's vision and the deeper meaning embedded in her work; the children embraced their own creativity. They used natural materials such as leaves and sticks combined with bold, vibrant paints to craft their own masterpieces. These artworks reflect their interpretation of resilience and connection to nature and are proudly displayed in the Little Possums foyer.

Creating lasting intergenerational memories

At Little Possums, we believe in fostering meaningful connections that transcend generations. Our commitment to building a strong community involves creating opportunities for our young learners to bond with the elderly. Through these interactions, we aim to instil values of empathy, respect, and kindness in our children, while bringing joy and companionship to the elderly residents in our neighbourhood.

Once a month our transition-to-school classes visit our ‘Oldies’, as we fondly call them, at Uniting. On these days Lori, the wonderful lifestyle and wellness coordinator at Uniting, arrives with the Uniting bus to pick up the children and two of our staff members and drive them to the facility.

Upon arriving at Uniting, the children engage in delightful activities including playing with balloons, arts and crafts, singing songs, and reading stories. Following these activities, the children and educators accompany Lori around the facility to visit some of the less mobile 'Oldies,' presenting them with handmade gifts from the children.

These intergenerational moments are cherished by both the young and the elderly, fostering a sense of belonging and community that is truly heartwarming. The joy on the faces of the children as they proudly present their handmade creations, and the delighted smiles of the elderly as they receive these tokens of love, are testimonies to the profound impact of these interactions.

When our ‘Oldies’ come to visit us at Little Possums, the preschool children have the opportunity to spend quality time with them. The educators prepare various tables with engaging activities that both the children and elderly can enjoy together.

Our commitment to nurturing these bonds is unwavering, and we believe that through these efforts, we are building a more compassionate and connected community. The experiences shared between the young learners and the elderly residents are not only enriching but also serve as a beautiful reminder of the importance of intergenerational solidarity.
